Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Expected

Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Expected
Richard's confident smile disappeared.
He stared at the security camera mounted above the ballroom as though it had suddenly become a loaded weapon pointed directly at him.
"No one needs to review the footage," he said quickly.
"It was obvious what happened."
I stood, still holding Lily against my shoulder while blood continued to stain my evening gown.
"If it's so obvious," I replied, "then you won't mind watching it with everyone else."
The ballroom fell silent.
Guests exchanged uncertain glances.
Only minutes earlier they had looked at my daughter with suspicion.
Now they looked at Richard.
The hotel's general manager hurried into the ballroom after hearing the commotion.
"What happened?"
Richard answered before anyone else could speak.
"A child attempted to steal the charity necklace."
The manager looked at Lily's injured forehead.
Then at the blood covering the marble floor.
Finally, he noticed the security camera directly overhead.
"We have full video coverage," he said carefully.
"The recording can be played immediately."
Richard's face turned pale.
"The system is probably malfunctioning."
The manager frowned.
"Our surveillance system has backup recording on three separate servers."
The room erupted into whispers.
Within minutes, a large projector screen descended from the ceiling.
The ballroom lights dimmed.
Every guest watched in silence.
The video began.
Lily was standing quietly beside the dessert table, carefully balancing a plate of strawberries.
She never came within ten feet of the display case holding the diamond necklace.
Instead...
A woman wearing silver gloves casually approached Lily from behind.
She smiled warmly.
Bent down as if complimenting Lily's dress.
And in one smooth motion...
Slipped the velvet pouch into Lily's pocket.
The ballroom gasped.
The woman walked away without looking back.
Then came the second clip.
Richard walked directly toward Lily.
He never searched anyone else.
Never questioned another guest.
He marched straight to my daughter.
Reached into her pocket...
Pulled out the necklace...
And, before anyone could react, swung the wooden display rod that struck her across the forehead.
The recording froze.
No one spoke.
Not a single person.
Richard looked as though the floor had vanished beneath him.
Then someone in the crowd whispered,
"He knew exactly where to look."
And suddenly...
Everyone realized the same terrifying truth.

This had never been an investigation.
It had been a setup.
