Chapter 13 - The House at 8:55.

Roberto left the gala before anyone could stop him.
He did not explain himself to reporters.
He did not watch Ellis Crane being held inside the ballroom by security.
He did not wait for Grace to finish preserving the video evidence.
His daughter was at home.
The west wing fire alarm was active.
Nothing else mattered.
Marcus drove.
Roberto sat beside him calling the estate team again and again.
On the fourth attempt, someone answered.
Static filled the line.
Then a guard’s voice.
“Mr. Vale.”
“What is happening?”
“Alarm triggered in the west service corridor.”
“Any fire?”
“No visible flames.”
“Where is Sofía?”
A pause.
Roberto’s heart stopped.
“Where is my daughter?”
“María moved her.”
“Where?”
“We lost interior communication when the secondary network dropped.”
Marcus looked at Roberto.
The same network tactic again.
“Lock the estate down,” Marcus ordered over speaker.
“All exterior gates.”
“Nobody leaves.”
The guard answered.
“Already done.”
Roberto stared through the windshield.
Rain streaked across the glass.
For one terrible second, the road looked exactly like the photographs from Elena’s crash.
He forced the memory away.
“Faster.”
Marcus did not answer.
The car accelerated.
At the mansion, the exterior appeared calm.
No smoke.
No visible fire.
But emergency lights flashed behind several windows.
Security officers met them at the entrance.
“We found the alarm source,” one said.
“A manual pull station.”
“Someone activated it deliberately.”
“Who?” Roberto demanded.
“We have two unaccounted vendor badges from the gala support list.”
Roberto understood immediately.
The gala and the house had been coordinated.
Create a public spectacle downtown.
Pull Roberto and senior security away.
Trigger an alarm at home.
Use the confusion to enter the west wing.
“María!” Roberto shouted.
His voice echoed through the foyer.
No answer.
He ran upstairs.
Sofía’s bedroom was empty.
The gray teddy bear was gone.
His chest tightened.
He checked the adjoining room.
Empty.
A lamp lay on its side near the doorway.
“Roberto.”
Marcus stood behind him.
“There.”
A small smear of blood marked the edge of a white doorframe.
Roberto stared at it.
Then he saw a black button on the carpet.
Not from María’s uniform.
Not from any household staff clothing he recognized.
Marcus picked it up with gloves.
“Service jacket.”
A guard called from the corridor.
“We found someone.”
Roberto ran toward the west staircase.
A man lay restrained on the floor near the archive room.
Derek Sloan.
The private investigator who had followed María and lured Luis away.
His service jacket was torn at the sleeve.
One button was missing.
A security officer held him down.
Roberto stepped closer.
“Where is my daughter?”
Derek smiled through a split lip.
“I don’t know.”
Roberto’s expression became terrifyingly calm.
“Wrong answer.”
Marcus stepped between them before Roberto could move closer.
“Let us handle him.”
Roberto did not take his eyes off Derek.
“Where is Sofía?”
Derek laughed quietly.
“Ask the maid.”
A sound came from behind the paneled wall.
Three soft knocks.
Everyone froze.
Then three more.
Roberto turned.
The sound came from a narrow linen storage room hidden behind a decorative door.
He crossed the corridor and opened it.
María sat on the floor with Sofía wrapped tightly in her arms.
Blood ran from a small cut above María’s eyebrow.
Sofía clutched the teddy bear against her chest.
“Daddy?”
Roberto dropped to his knees.
“I’m here.”
Sofía reached for him.
He pulled both her and María close.
For several seconds, Roberto could not speak.
He only held them.
María’s breathing shook.
“He came through the service corridor.”
“Derek?”
“Yes.”
“He was wearing a maintenance jacket.”
“He said there was smoke upstairs.”
“I knew something was wrong because I did not smell anything.”
“What happened to your head?”
“He tried to take Sofía’s bear.”
Roberto looked at the teddy.
The seam had been ripped open again.
Derek had been looking for the USB.
“He thought the drive was still inside,” Roberto said.
María nodded.
“I pulled Sofía away.”
“He grabbed me.”
“I hit the alarm on my phone, but the network died.”
“How did you get away?”
María looked at Sofía.
The little girl answered.
“I knew the hall better than he did.”
Roberto stared at her.
Sofía touched the wall beside her.
“Vanessa used to move things to make me get lost.”
“So I started memorizing the walls instead of the furniture.”
Roberto’s eyes filled.
The skill Vanessa had forced Sofía to develop through cruelty had helped her escape one of Vanessa’s own people.
Sofía continued.
“I knew this door was here because the air sounds different.”
María smiled through tears.
“She pulled me inside.”
Roberto kissed the top of his daughter’s head.
“You saved both of you.”
Sofía shook her head.
“María kicked him.”
Despite everything, Roberto laughed once.
María almost laughed too.
Marcus entered.
“Derek is secured.”
“There was another intruder.”
Roberto stood.
“Who?”
“Jenna Pike.”
“Adrian’s sister?”
“Yes.”
“She entered through the catering loading gate using a vendor credential.”
“Where is she?”
“Gone.”
“How?”
“She left before the outer lockdown completed.”
“What did she take?”
Marcus held up a clear evidence bag.
“Nothing from the archive that we can identify.”
“But she accessed the security control cabinet.”
“The cameras?”
“Yes.”
“She copied something onto a drive.”
Roberto looked toward Derek.
This operation had two purposes.
Derek searched for Elena’s hidden evidence.
Jenna manipulated security records.
“What would she need from the system?”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Not what was recorded.”
“Access credentials.”
“To what?”
“The executive network.”
Vale Holdings executives occasionally worked remotely from the mansion through a hardened corporate connection.
If Jenna had copied authentication material, Adrian Pike could potentially access restricted company systems.
Roberto’s phone rang.
Helen Ward.
He answered.
“Roberto, where are you?”
“Home.”
“Adrian just called an emergency electronic board vote.”
Roberto went still.
“For what?”
“To suspend you.”
“He says the gala incident proves you compromised foundation systems to smear Ellis.”
Roberto looked at Marcus.
“They’re using the Elena video against me.”
Helen continued.
“Adrian claims your credentials were used to replace the gala presentation.”
The copied security access.
The timing became clear.
Jenna had not merely attacked the mansion network.
She was constructing a digital trail that could make Roberto appear responsible for the unauthorized gala video.
“How long until the vote?” Roberto asked.
“Twenty minutes.”
“Delay it.”
“I’m trying.”
Roberto ended the call.
Marcus said, “We can prove your physical location.”
“They’ll say I ordered it.”
Grace called next.
Her voice was urgent.
“Nathan disappeared.”
Roberto froze.
“What?”
“He left his apartment after sending the gala messages.”
“His phone is off.”
“Locker 417?”
“I sent investigators.”
“The facility manager says someone tried to access it ten minutes ago with Nathan’s code.”
“Who?”
“They stopped the person because the identification did not match.”
“Security footage shows a woman.”
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Jenna Pike.”
Roberto looked at Marcus.
Everything was collapsing toward the same location.
“Go to the storage facility,” Roberto said.
Marcus hesitated.
“You stay here.”
“My daughter needs you more than the locker does.”
Roberto looked toward Sofía.
She still held the torn teddy bear.
Elena’s last video echoed in his mind.
Come home before Sofía learns to stop waiting for you.
For once, Roberto made the choice immediately.
“Send a team.”
“I’m staying.”
Marcus nodded once.
At 9:03 PM, the Vale Holdings board vote began electronically.
At 9:05, Grace filed an emergency objection and distributed evidence of the planted access credentials.
At 9:07, Helen Ward demanded the vote pause pending a security investigation.
At 9:09, Adrian Pike pushed to continue anyway.
At 9:11, police detained Jenna Pike outside Storage Locker 417.
She had Nathan’s access code written on a card inside her purse.
At 9:14, the board vote was suspended.
At 9:16, investigators opened Locker 417.
Inside were six banker’s boxes, three encrypted drives, a sealed waterproof envelope, and an old auto body repair invoice.
Grace photographed the invoice and sent it to Roberto.
His hands went cold when he enlarged the image.
The repair order was dated the morning after Elena’s crash.
Vehicle: Black 2018 SUV.
Customer: Crane Strategic Partners.
Damage: Front passenger-side scrape and paint transfer.
Special instruction handwritten at the bottom:
NO INSURANCE.
NO PHOTOS.
Roberto stared at the words.
The vehicle identification number matched the SUV that had been at Nathan’s office the day Elena died.

And the paint transfer noted by the repair shop was silver.
The same color as Elena’s car.
