Chapter 12 - The Gala Trap.

Roberto canceled Sofía’s appearance within five minutes of leaving Nathan.

He wanted to cancel the entire gala.

Grace argued against it.

“If Vanessa and Ellis have planned something public, canceling may only move it somewhere we control less.”

Roberto stared at her.

“My daughter is not bait.”

“Absolutely not.”

“She does not attend.”

“But you do.”

Marcus agreed.

“We secure the venue.”

“We control entrances.”

“We monitor everyone connected to Vanessa, Ellis, Nathan, and Crane Strategic.”

Roberto hated the idea.

But he also knew they could not spend the next month waiting for an attack shaped by someone else.

The Vale Foundation gala was held in the Grand Meridian ballroom, a glass-and-stone venue overlooking the river.

By 6:30 PM the next night, camera crews lined the entrance.

Reporters expected marital drama.

Roberto intended to give them none.

He arrived alone.

No Vanessa.

No Sofía.

No public statement.

He wore a black tuxedo and expressionless calm.

Questions came immediately.

“Mr. Vale, did you force your wife out of the family home?”

“Is your board considering removing you?”

“Will Mrs. Vale attend tonight?”

Roberto did not stop.

Inside, Marcus’s team watched every entrance.

Grace remained near the stage.

Helen Ward attended as a board representative.

Ellis Crane arrived at 7:05 PM.

He wore a white dinner jacket and smiled like a man attending someone else’s crisis.

He approached Roberto near the donor wall.

“I’m surprised you came.”

Roberto looked at him.

“I heard you were.”

Ellis’s smile did not move.

“You should be careful with rumors.”

“I prefer original documents.”

For the first time, Ellis’s eyes changed.

Only briefly.

“Your wife’s death damaged you more deeply than any of us understood.”

Roberto held his gaze.

“You’re right.”

“It made me trust the wrong people for years.”

Ellis took a sip of champagne.

“Grief can create patterns where none exist.”

“So can bank transfers.”

Ellis lowered the glass.

Before he could answer, applause began near the ballroom doors.

Vanessa had arrived.

She wore a simple black gown.

No dramatic color.

No jewelry except small pearl earrings.

She looked dignified and wounded.

The cameras loved her immediately.

Roberto watched her enter.

She did not approach him.

Instead, she greeted donors, thanked foundation volunteers, and behaved as though the previous week had been an unfortunate private misunderstanding.

It was performance at the highest level.

At 7:40 PM, dinner began.

At 8:10, the foundation chair took the stage.

At 8:17, Roberto’s phone buzzed.

Marcus.

SERVICE CORRIDOR. MOVEMENT.

Roberto stood quietly and left the ballroom.

Marcus met him behind the kitchen.

“Camille Ross’s former assistant entered with vendor credentials.”

“Name?”

“Jenna Pike.”

Roberto stopped.

“Pike?”

Marcus nodded.

“Adrian Pike’s younger sister.”

The circle tightened again.

“Where is she?”

“We lost her for ninety seconds near audiovisual control.”

“What did she do?”

“Technicians are checking.”

Roberto returned to the ballroom just as the lights dimmed for the annual foundation film.

A large screen descended behind the stage.

The planned video was supposed to show scholarship recipients.

Instead, Vanessa’s face appeared.

The ballroom went silent.

It was a pre-recorded statement.

Vanessa sat in a neutral room looking directly into the camera.

“I did not want tonight to become about me.”

A murmur moved through the guests.

Roberto’s stomach dropped.

Vanessa continued.

“But silence protects powerful people.”

Grace rushed toward the audiovisual booth.

The screen changed.

A blurred clip appeared showing Roberto moving toward Vanessa in the mansion hallway.

It was from a security angle Roberto had not known existed.

The footage showed him stepping quickly between Vanessa and the others.

Then the image cut exactly before context became clear.

A second clip showed Vanessa losing balance and falling.

Gasps spread through the room.

The edit made Roberto look like the aggressor.

Marcus swore.

“She had another camera.”

Roberto watched without moving.

Vanessa’s recorded voice continued.

“I was told nobody would believe me.”

The screen showed a photograph of María.

Then reimbursement records totaling $74,600.

The fraudulent records.

The audience murmured louder.

Next came a caption:

HOUSEKEEPER UNDER INTERNAL REVIEW FOR FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT.

Roberto’s anger surged.

They were destroying María publicly exactly as planned.

Then came the worst part.

Audio of Sofía’s voice played over the speakers.

“I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t see it.”

The recording had been cut from a longer moment.

Vanessa’s narration framed it as proof that Sofía often blamed herself during emotional episodes.

Roberto stood.

“Turn it off.”

The technicians could not.

The system had been locked remotely.

Guests raised phones.

Reporters moved toward the stage.

Vanessa sat at a front table with tears in her eyes, appearing shocked by a presentation she clearly knew was coming.

Then the screen changed again.

A title appeared.

WHY ROBERTO VALE CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH CONTROL.

Below it was a Vale Holdings logo.

This was no longer marital scandal.

It was a corporate coup in public.

Ellis Crane rose from his chair slowly.

He looked appropriately horrified.

Too appropriately.

Helen Ward stared at him.

Roberto saw realization cross her face.

The next slide showed an unsigned board resolution recommending immediate suspension of Roberto’s executive authority.

Someone had planned for the gala presentation to create the crisis, then use the crisis to justify the vote.

Grace reached Roberto.

“We can cut building power.”

“Do it.”

Before she moved, the screen went black on its own.

Then a new video began.

Not Vanessa’s.

Elena appeared.

Roberto froze.

Someone in the ballroom gasped.

Elena’s recorded image filled the massive screen.

“Nathan introduced me to an investment proposal from Ellis Crane.”

Ellis’s face lost all color.

Vanessa stood abruptly.

Roberto turned toward Marcus.

“Did you do this?”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

Elena continued on screen.

“The structure would have given Crane Strategic Partners extraordinary control over assets that are supposed to belong to Sofía.”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Ellis moved toward the exit.

Security blocked him.

Vanessa stared at the screen in disbelief.

Grace looked at her phone.

“I know who replaced the feed.”

“Who?” Roberto asked.

Grace turned the screen toward him.

A message had arrived from Nathan Cole.

YOU NEEDED THEM ALL IN ONE ROOM.

Roberto looked toward the ballroom doors.

Nathan was not present.

Another message arrived.

CHECK STORAGE LOCKER 417 BEFORE ELLIS DOES.

Then a third.

AND KEEP SOFÍA AWAY FROM THE HOUSE TONIGHT.

Roberto’s blood went cold.

Sofía was not at the gala.

She was at the mansion with María.

He called Marcus’s estate team immediately.

No answer.

He called María.

No answer.

Then his phone displayed a security alert from home.

WEST WING FIRE ALARM.

Before the opening program, Roberto quietly met Helen Ward near a service corridor and gave her a sealed copy of the evidence linking Ellis's investment vehicle to Vanessa's pre-marriage consulting company.

“If I am removed tonight, this goes to the full board and regulators.”

Helen looked at him.

“You think it may happen tonight?”

“I think someone wants me reacting instead of thinking.”

“Then don't react.”

Roberto almost smiled.

“That advice would have been more useful ten years ago.”

Helen slipped the envelope into her bag.

Across the ballroom, Vanessa watched them.

She raised her champagne glass slightly when Roberto met her eyes.

It was not a toast.

It was recognition.

May you like

For the first time, both of them knew the performance was over.

Whatever happened next would be about evidence, control, and which story could survive daylight.
