Chapter 9: The Phoenix Files

"They've adapted."

Lucía's warning barely escaped her lips before the six strangers began moving.

Not quickly.

Not carelessly.

Each of them blended naturally into the crowd, splitting off in different directions as if they were simply travelers catching buses.

But they all had the same destination.

Locker 214.

Mateo.

The twins.

"They don't want a scene," Dalia whispered.

"They're waiting until we're isolated."

Lucía snapped the laptop shut and slipped it into her backpack.

"Don't run."

Mateo frowned.

"What?"

"If we run, they'll know exactly where to follow."

She adjusted the backpack on her shoulder and smiled as though they were old friends on vacation.

"Walk."

Keeping Sofía in his arms while Dalia carried Camila, Mateo followed Lucía into the flow of travelers.

Around them, the terminal buzzed with ordinary life.

A little boy begged his father for candy.

An elderly couple argued over departure times.

Tourists laughed as they posed for selfies beneath a colorful Cancún sign.

To everyone else, nothing was wrong.

But Mateo could feel eyes on him.

Watching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

One of the strangers stopped at a nearby coffee stand and casually picked up a newspaper.

Another pretended to study the departure board.

A third sat on a bench scrolling through his phone.

None of them looked suspicious.

That was exactly what made them dangerous.

Lucía led the group into a crowded café near the center of the terminal.

"Sit," she whispered.

They took a booth in the back.

Only then did she reopen the laptop.

The folder labeled PHOENIX CHILDREN contained dozens of files.

Videos.

Photographs.

Scanned documents.

Audio recordings.

Mateo clicked the first file.

It was a spreadsheet.

Rows of patient numbers filled the screen.

Subject 1 — Deceased

Subject 2 — Deceased

Subject 3 — Terminated

Subject 4 — Deceased

Subject 5 — Missing

Subject 6 — Deceased

Subject 7 — Recovery Successful

Subject 8 — Deceased

Subject 9 — Recovery Successful

Subject 10 — Deceased

Subject 11 — Missing

Mateo stared at the screen.

"There were eleven babies."

Dalia nodded slowly.

"But only two successful recoveries."

Lucía pointed at another line.

"No."

She highlighted Subjects 5 and 11.

"They're listed as missing."

Mateo frowned.

"Not dead."

"Exactly."

He felt a chill run down his spine.

"If they're missing..."

"They may still be alive," Lucía finished.

Before anyone spoke again, Mateo opened another file.

A photograph appeared.

It showed the NICU only minutes after the blackout.

Nurses rushed between incubators.

Doctors performed CPR.

The image was chaotic.

Then Dalia leaned closer.

"Pause."

Mateo enlarged the photograph.

In the far corner of the room stood three people dressed in black suits.

They weren't helping.

They weren't doctors.

They were simply watching.

One of them held a clipboard.

Another checked his watch.

The third stared directly at the incubators containing Subjects 7 and 9.

"They were there during the emergency," Dalia whispered.

"They weren't responding to it."

"They were expecting it."

Lucía opened the next file.

A short security video.

The timestamp read:

2:43 A.M.

The power outage had already begun.

The footage showed nurses rushing frantically through the hallway.

Then, thirty seconds later—

The image froze.

Static filled the screen.

For five long seconds.

When the picture returned...

Something had changed.

One incubator was gone.

Mateo leaned closer.

"What happened?"

Lucía replayed the clip.

The incubator disappeared during the static.

No one carried it away.

No one appeared on camera.

It simply...

Wasn't there anymore.

"The missing child," Dalia whispered.

"Subject 11."

Mateo rubbed his forehead.

"This makes no sense."

"No," Lucía agreed.

"It doesn't."

Another folder caught Mateo's attention.

Audio_Recovery_07.wav

He clicked it.

Static crackled through the laptop speakers.

Then voices.

Doctors shouting.

Machines beeping.

Someone counting chest compressions.

Then—

A man's voice.

Calm.

Clear.

Completely different from the panic around him.

"Time of death confirmed."

Another voice answered.

"Proceed with Observation Protocol."

Several seconds passed.

Then the first man spoke again.

"Wait."

Silence.

"What is it?" another doctor asked.

The recording captured several gasps.

Then someone whispered in disbelief.

"Cardiac activity..."

Another voice interrupted.

"Impossible."

The calm man spoke one final sentence.

"Subject Seven has recovered."

The audio ended.

No one at the table moved.

Mateo felt tears sting his eyes.

"That's Sofía."

Dalia nodded.

Lucía quietly opened the last file in the folder.

Unlike the others, it wasn't labeled with a patient number.

Instead it read:

Director_Notes

Inside was a scanned handwritten page.

The signature at the bottom belonged to the hospital director.

The note contained only a few lines.

Recovery exceeded all projections.

The surviving children must never be separated.

Continue observation until activation.

Mateo looked up.

"Activation?"

Lucía slowly shook her head.

"I don't know."

Neither did Dalia.

The word hung over the table like a storm cloud.

Then Sofía suddenly looked up from Mateo's lap.

She wasn't looking at him.

She was staring across the café.

Toward a man reading a newspaper.

The same man who had entered the terminal earlier.

Without warning, the little girl quietly said her first complete sentence of the day.

"He isn't here to help us."

Everyone froze.

Mateo blinked.

"Sofía?"

She kept staring at the stranger.

Then pointed her tiny finger toward him.

"He has the same eyes..."

She turned toward the terminal entrance.

"...as the man from the hospital."

A cold silence settled over the table.

Mateo had never told his daughters anything about Santa María Hospital.

They had been only newborns.

There was no possible way Sofía could remember that night.

Yet across the room...

The man slowly lowered his newspaper.

He looked directly at Sofía.

May you like

And then...

He smiled.
