Chapter 5: The File They Tried to Erase

Glass exploded across the kitchen floor.

The sound echoed through the small house like a gunshot.

Dr. Valeria Ramos jumped to her feet.

"They found us."

Mateo instinctively grabbed Sofía and Camila, pulling them close against his chest.

Dalia hurried to the hallway window and carefully peeked through the blinds.

"There are three of them," she whispered. "No... four."

A shadow moved across the backyard.

Then another.

They weren't rushing.

They moved with calm precision, surrounding the house as though they'd done this countless times before.

"They're cutting off every exit," Dalia said.

Dr. Ramos hurried to a bookshelf and yanked out a thick medical textbook.

Behind it was a small steel safe hidden inside the wall.

Mateo stared.

"You've been expecting this."

"For a year."

Her hands trembled as she entered a six-digit code.

The lock clicked open.

Inside were a passport, several bundles of cash, a loaded flash drive, and a weathered manila folder tied with faded red string.

She ignored everything except the folder.

"This," she said, pressing it into Mateo's hands, "is why they're here."

He looked down at the worn cover.

Across the front, handwritten in black marker, were four words.

NICU INCIDENT—DO NOT DESTROY

"What is this?" Mateo asked.

"The only copy they never found."

Another loud crash shook the house.

Someone was forcing open the back door.

"We're out of time," Dr. Ramos said.

She hurried to the kitchen and pulled the refrigerator away from the wall.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

Mateo frowned.

"A hidden passage?"

"My grandfather built this house."

She opened the door, revealing a cramped tunnel beneath the foundation.

"It leads to the alley behind the neighborhood."

Dalia looked surprised.

"You never told me about this."

"I hoped I'd never have to."

The sound of splintering wood echoed through the kitchen.

The back door had given way.

Voices drifted inside.

"Clear the first floor."

"Nobody leaves."

Dr. Ramos turned back to Mateo.

"Go."

"What about you?"

"I'll slow them down."

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"If all four of us run, they'll chase us."

She looked at the twins.

"If I stay... they'll think the evidence stayed with me."

Mateo shook his head.

"They'll kill you."

"They were always going to."

Dalia stepped forward.

"You can come with us."

Dr. Ramos gently squeezed her hand.

"No."

Then she looked at Mateo with quiet determination.

"Protect those girls."

"They've already taken enough children."

The words hit him like ice.

"What do you mean?"

She opened her mouth—

But a voice interrupted from the hallway.

"We know you're still inside."

It was the older man from the condo.

His tone remained calm.

Professional.

"Doctor Ramos, this doesn't have to end badly."

She laughed bitterly.

"It already did."

The footsteps grew closer.

Dr. Ramos pushed Mateo toward the hidden tunnel.

"Go!"

He hesitated.

She shoved the folder against his chest.

"Promise me."

"What?"

"You won't let them erase the truth."

Mateo met her eyes.

"I promise."

She nodded once.

Then slammed the hidden door shut behind them.

Darkness surrounded the narrow tunnel.

The only sound was the twins' quiet breathing and distant footsteps above them.

They crawled through damp earth for what felt like forever.

Then—

A muffled scream echoed through the tunnel.

Dalia froze.

"Valeria..."

Another sound followed.

A heavy thud.

Then silence.

Complete silence.

No one spoke.

No one needed to.

They all understood.

Dr. Valeria Ramos had bought them time.

Nothing more.

Five minutes later, they emerged behind an abandoned warehouse two blocks away.

Mateo looked back toward the neighborhood.

Police sirens wailed in the distance.

Smoke drifted above the rooftops.

Dalia wiped away tears.

"They'll call it a home invasion."

Mateo already knew.

"Or an accidental fire."

"They'll erase everything."

He looked down at the manila folder still clutched in his hands.

"This time they won't."

They climbed into the pickup and drove without speaking.

Only after they reached the outskirts of the city did Mateo finally pull over beneath an abandoned gas station.

He carefully untied the faded red string around the folder.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Original patient charts.

Handwritten nursing notes.

Power outage reports.

Equipment failure logs.

Photographs.

Everything the hospital had claimed no longer existed.

Near the bottom of the stack lay a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in Dr. Ramos's handwriting, were the words:

Open Only If They Find Me

Mateo slowly opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only three sentences.

If you're reading this, I'm already dead.

The hospital wasn't hiding a medical mistake.

They were hiding an experiment.

Mateo stared at the letter in disbelief.

His hands began to shake.

He quickly searched the rest of the folder.

Near the back was a list of newborn identification numbers.

Eleven names.

Just as Dalia had said.

Eight were marked DECEASED.

But three names had no status beside them.

Instead, each had been stamped with a symbol Mateo had never seen before.

A black circle...

with a white phoenix rising from its center.

At the bottom of the page, someone had typed a single line.

TRANSFERRED UNDER PROJECT PHOENIX

Before Mateo could say a word, Dalia reached for another document hidden beneath the list.

Her face instantly turned white.

She handed it to him without speaking.

It was Sofía's birth record.

Except it wasn't.

At the top, where his daughter's name should have been, someone had typed:

SUBJECT 7

And underneath it, in bold red letters:

RECOVERY SUCCESSFUL
