Part 3 — The Truth Hidden for Months

Part 3 — The Truth Hidden for Months
The wedding was canceled before midnight.
By sunrise, the mansion was nearly empty.
Only Adrian, his son, Lena, and a family attorney remained.
The attorney placed a thin folder on the dining table.
"There are several reports you need to see."
Adrian opened the file.
Inside were security camera stills.
Dates.
Times.
Notes from the nanny who had resigned three months earlier.
Every page told the same story.
His son always became withdrawn after spending time alone with the bride.
The nanny had reported emotional intimidation.
The preschool teacher had noticed sudden anxiety.
Even the family doctor had recommended counseling after the little boy developed recurring nightmares.
Adrian stared at every page.
Each warning had been explained away.
"He's adjusting."
"He's sensitive."
"He misses his mother."
He had believed every excuse.
Lena quietly placed a small stuffed dinosaur on the table.
"He asked me to keep this hidden."
Adrian frowned.
"Why?"
"He said she would throw it away because boys who cry don't deserve toys."
The little boy slowly walked into the room.
"Daddy..."
"I'm sorry."
Adrian immediately knelt in front of him.
"You have nothing to be sorry for."
The boy lowered his head.
"I thought if I smiled..."
"...you'd be happy."
Adrian wrapped his son in the tightest hug he had ever given.
"No."
"I should've protected you."
Tears rolled freely down his face.
Not because his marriage had ended.
But because he realized his son had been carrying fear alone for months.
That afternoon, Adrian filed for an annulment and obtained a protective order preventing the former bride from contacting his child.
This time...

He wasn't ignoring the warning signs.
He was finally listening.
