Chapter 3 — The CEO Walks Into the Room

Chapter 3 — The CEO Walks Into the Room
Whitaker Construction's headquarters is already full when the Collins family arrives.
Executives whisper nervously.
Nobody knows why an emergency meeting was called on Christmas morning.
Rebecca Monroe steps onto the stage.
She thanks everyone for eight successful years.
Then she makes an announcement that freezes the room.
"My role as acting CEO ends today."
Confused murmurs spread throughout the auditorium.
Brian looks at Vanessa.
Eric frowns.
Martin smiles proudly, assuming Rebecca is introducing some billionaire owner.
Instead, Rebecca says,
"It is my honor to introduce the founder, owner, and Chairman of Whitaker Construction..."
She pauses.
"...Mr. Daniel Whitaker."
The auditorium doors open.
Daniel walks inside wearing the same work boots Martin has mocked for years.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Brian slowly stands.
Eric's face loses all color.
Vanessa drops her notebook.
Martin whispers,
"No..."
Rebecca continues.
"For eight years, Mr. Whitaker chose humility over recognition."
Screens throughout the auditorium begin displaying photographs.
Daniel visiting construction sites.
Daniel helping employees after tornado damage.
Daniel personally delivering Christmas bonuses.
Daniel building homes for veterans.
Daniel mentoring apprentices.
Everything the Collins family never knew.
Martin realizes every insult...
Every joke...
May you like
Every humiliation...
Had been directed at the man who signed their paychecks.
