Chapter 11 - The Voice From The PastEmily stared at the unknown message.

Her first instinct was fear.

Not because she didn’t believe it.

Because she did.

Someone had the original contract.

Someone knew the truth.

And someone had been waiting for the right moment to reveal it.

Her fingers hovered over the screen.

She wanted to reply immediately.

She wanted answers.

She wanted to know everything.

But Rachel’s warning echoed in her mind.

Do not confront anyone before you understand what you are dealing with.

So Emily waited.

For the first time in her life...

She waited.

She didn’t react emotionally.

She didn’t chase.

She didn’t beg.

She simply typed one sentence.

Who are you?

The reply came less than a minute later.

Someone who watched Michael destroy people before.

Emily’s heart tightened.

Another message appeared.

Someone who knows he doesn’t stop until he gets what he wants.

She looked at the screen.

The words felt impossible.

Because that meant Michael had done this before.

The contract.

The pressure.

The manipulation.

Maybe Emily wasn’t the first.

She typed:

How do you know him?

The response took longer this time.

Almost five minutes.

Then:

Because I was married to him before you.

Emily stopped breathing.

The room suddenly felt silent.

Even the heart monitor seemed distant.

She read the sentence again.

And again.

Michael had been married before.

But he never told her.

Not once.

Not a single conversation.

Not a single photograph.

Not a single mention.

Emily looked toward the hospital door.

Suddenly, every strange moment in their marriage felt different.

The secrets.

The locked drawers.

The old phone he never let her touch.

The way he became defensive whenever she asked about his past.

She had thought he was private.

Now she wondered if he was hiding something much darker.

The woman finally introduced herself.

My name is Lauren.

Emily stared at the name.

Then another message arrived.

I was married to Michael for three years.

Emily typed slowly.

What happened?

The answer came.

The same thing that is happening to you.

A cold feeling moved through Emily.

The same thing?

He isolated me.

He controlled my money.

He convinced everyone I was unstable.

Emily’s hand tightened around the phone.

Because those words sounded too familiar.

Lauren continued.

When I tried to leave, he made sure nobody believed me.

He told my family I was confused.

He told his friends I was mentally unstable.

Emily closed her eyes.

Michael’s words returned.

You don’t want to make enemies.

People believe the person who looks powerful.

He had said those things because he had done this before.

The next message arrived.

Emily, I need you to understand something.

She waited.

Michael doesn’t lose control because he gets angry.

He loses control because he is afraid of losing power.

Emily looked down at her bruised hands.

Power.

That was exactly what everything had been about.

The house.

The money.

The documents.

The marriage.

Control.

Lauren sent another message.

I have proof.

Emily’s heart raced.

What kind of proof?

Documents.

Messages.

A recording.

Emily froze.

A recording of what?

The answer came slowly.

Michael admitting what he did to my contract.

Emily stared.

This was bigger than she imagined.

Much bigger.

She immediately called Rachel.

The lawyer answered quickly.

“Emily?”

“I found someone.”

A pause.

“Who?”

“Michael’s ex-wife.”

Silence.

Then:

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Emily explained everything.

Rachel listened carefully.

When Emily finished, the lawyer spoke.

“This could be significant.”

“Could?”

“Yes.”

Rachel’s voice became serious.

“But we need to be careful.”

“Why?”

“Because if Michael has manipulated people before, he will know how to protect himself.”

Emily looked at the phone.

“What do I do?”

“Do not meet her alone.”

Emily nodded.

“Okay.”

“And Emily?”

“Yes?”

“Save every message.”

“I will.”

Two hours later, Lauren sent the location of the evidence.

A storage unit.

Emily stared at the address.

Then she realized something.

The location was not far from Columbus.

The same area where her parents bought the house.

The same area where Michael had been spending more time recently.

A terrible thought entered her mind.

What if Michael wasn’t just helping her parents?

What if he had planned everything from the beginning?

The next morning, Emily received unexpected news.

Her doctor entered the room.

His expression was serious.

“Emily.”

She looked up.

“What happened?”

“We need to discuss your delivery.”

Her heart immediately tightened.

“Is something wrong with the baby?”

“No.”

Relief.

Then concern returned.

“But your stress levels are dangerous.”

Emily looked away.

“I know.”

The doctor hesitated.

“You need a safer environment after discharge.”

Emily almost smiled.

Safer environment.

A simple phrase.

But one she desperately needed.

“I don’t have one.”

The doctor looked at her.

“Then we need to help you find one.”

For the first time in days, Emily felt something close to hope.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn’t.

Michael was still out there.

Her parents were still involved.

The contract was still unresolved.

But she finally had people standing beside her.

People who wanted her safe.

Not useful.

That evening, Emily received one final message from Lauren.

This time, there was an attachment.

A photo.

Emily opened it.

Her blood turned cold.

It was a document.

An old marriage agreement.

At the bottom was Michael’s signature.

And beside it...

A clause.

The exact same clause from her own contract.

The same language.

The same structure.

The same manipulation.

Emily whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Because now she knew.

The contract wasn’t a mistake.

It was a pattern.

Michael had been doing this for years.

And she was just the newest person trapped inside it.

Then another message appeared.

There is one more thing you need to know.

Emily stared.

What?

Lauren replied:

Your parents didn’t find Michael by accident.

Emily’s heart stopped.

What do you mean?

A final message appeared.

They knew about his past before they introduced him to you.

Emily dropped the phone onto the bed.

The room spun.

Her parents.

The people who had raised her.

The people who claimed they loved her.

Had they known?

Had they chosen Michael because he could help them?

Because he could control her?

The heart monitor beside her started beating faster.

Emily placed a hand over her belly.

Her daughter moved.

A reminder.

A promise.

She whispered:

“I’m going to find the truth.”

May you like

And this time...

Nobody was going to stop her.
