Chapter 10 - The Man Behind The MaskEmily did not tell anyone what her father had revealed.

Not yet.
For the first time in her life, she understood the importance of keeping something to herself.
Secrets had always hurt her.
But information...
Information could protect her.
She looked at the hospital room door.
Then at the phone beside her.
Then at the documents spread across the table.
Everything that had happened suddenly looked different.
The argument with Michael.
The pressure from her parents.
The urgency around the house.
The way everyone kept insisting she needed to sign quickly.
It was never about helping her family.
It was about preventing her from seeing the truth.
Emily slowly reached for her phone.
She opened the recording app.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she needed proof.
The next morning, Emily received another visitor.
This time, it was not Michael.
It was someone she had never expected to see.
A lawyer.
A woman in her forties wearing a dark suit walked into the room carrying a folder.
“Emily Carter?”
Emily looked up.
“Yes?”
“My name is Rachel Morgan.”
Emily recognized the name.
The hospital advocate.
But this time, she wasn’t carrying hospital documents.
She was carrying something else.
“Your bank contacted me after reviewing your case.”
Emily frowned.
“My case?”
Rachel sat down.
“Emily, I want you to understand something.”
“What?”
“You are not only dealing with a family disagreement.”
Emily stayed silent.
Rachel opened the folder.
“You may be dealing with financial fraud, coercion, and domestic abuse.”
The words felt heavy.
But they no longer scared Emily.
Because now they finally matched what she had experienced.
Rachel placed several papers on the table.
“These are copies of the information provided by the bank.”
Emily looked down.
One document immediately caught her attention.
A signature page.
Her signature.
But something was wrong.
She leaned closer.
“This isn’t the page I saw.”
Rachel nodded.
“That’s what the bank suspects.”
Emily’s stomach tightened.
“So someone replaced pages?”
“Possibly.”
“Who?”
Rachel looked at her.
“That is what we need to determine.”
Emily thought about Michael.
Her parents.
The house.
Then she remembered something.
A small detail.
Something she had forgotten.
“Wait.”
Rachel looked up.
“What?”
“Michael always handled the printer.”
Rachel frowned.
“Explain.”
“When my parents sent the documents, Michael said he would organize everything.”
Emily looked at the papers.
“He printed the copies.”
Rachel wrote something down.
“Did you ever receive a digital copy?”
Emily thought.
“No.”
“Did your parents?”
“I don’t know.”
Rachel leaned back.
“That matters.”
Emily looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because whoever controlled the final version controlled what you saw.”
The room became quiet.
Emily felt sick.
Because suddenly, she remembered.
The night she signed.
Michael standing behind her.
Watching every page.
Waiting.
Laughing whenever she slowed down.
She had thought he was impatient.
Now she wondered.
Was he making sure she didn’t notice?
That afternoon, Michael arrived.
But this time, Emily was prepared.
She placed her phone on the table.
The recording app was open.
Hidden.
Michael walked inside.
His expression was calmer.
Too calm.
“Emily.”
She looked at him.
“Michael.”
He smiled slightly.
“I’m glad you’re willing to talk.”
Emily said nothing.
He pulled a chair closer.
“I know things have gotten out of control.”
Out of control.
Another phrase.
Another way to avoid responsibility.
“What do you want?”
Michael looked hurt.
“I want my family back.”
Emily stared at him.
“Your family?”
“Yes.”
“You mean the house?”
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But she saw it.
A tiny crack.
Then he recovered.
“You’re still angry.”
“No.”
Emily surprised him.
“I’m awake.”
Michael became quiet.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I finally understand what’s happening.”
He leaned forward.
“Emily, you’re making assumptions.”
“Am I?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“Then answer one question.”
“Okay.”
“Did you change the agreement?”
The silence was immediate.
Not hesitation.
Not confusion.
Silence.
The kind that comes before a lie.
Michael smiled.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Emily watched his face.
“You didn’t answer.”
“There is nothing to answer.”
“Then say no.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Emily.”
“Say no.”
The room became tense.
Michael looked away.
And that was enough.
Emily felt her heartbeat increase.
Not from fear.
From confirmation.
“You did.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Then explain.”
“I was trying to help.”
Emily almost laughed.
“Help?”
“Yes.”
“You changed legal documents to help me?”
Michael stood.
“You have no idea how complicated everything was.”
Emily stayed calm.
“Then explain.”
He walked closer.
His voice lowered.
“You think your parents were innocent?”
Emily said nothing.
“They were desperate.”
Still nothing.
“They needed that house.”
Emily looked at him.
“And you needed control.”
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But it was there.
Anger.
Real anger.
“You think you’re smarter now?”
Emily stared.
“I think I finally stopped being afraid.”
Michael stepped back.
That sentence affected him.
Because fear had always been his weapon.
Without fear...
He had nothing.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Emily looked directly at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I made that mistake when I trusted you.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t want to do this.”
Emily picked up the phone.
“I already did.”
His eyes moved toward the phone.
A small movement.
But enough.
He knew.
He knew she had been recording.
The calm mask disappeared.
“You recorded me?”
Emily didn’t answer.
Michael laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he was angry.
“You really think that changes anything?”
Emily looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because now I have the truth.”
Michael stared at her.
Then he smiled.
A cold smile.
“You still don’t understand.”
Emily felt a chill.
“Understand what?”
He stepped toward the door.
“That people believe the person who looks powerful.”
He paused.
“And right now?”
His eyes moved over her hospital bed.
“You don’t.”
The door closed.
Emily sat still.
For a moment, his words hurt.
Because they were true.
People often believed appearances.
But Michael had forgotten something.
Appearances only lasted until evidence appeared.
And Emily finally had something he couldn’t control.
Her voice.
Her story.
Her proof.
That night, Emily received a message from an unknown number.
She opened it.
One sentence.
I have the original contract.
Her heart stopped.
Another message followed.
But if you want it, you need to know what Michael did before you signed.
Emily stared at the screen.
Because she realized something.
May you like
The contract was not the biggest secret.
The biggest secret was what happened before it ever reached her hands.
