Chapter 4: The Last Door

Chapter 4: The Last Door
Sirens echoed outside the ballroom.
Not police sirens.
Federal investigators.
The massive entrance doors unlocked with a deep metallic click.
Instead of frightened guests escaping...
Armed investigators entered.
"Warrant for financial fraud."
"Corporate espionage."
"Attempted murder."
The groom tried to run.
Two agents stopped him before he reached the staircase.
As handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he looked back at the woman.
"You planned all of this..."
She nodded.
"For three years."
He laughed bitterly.
"The doors..."
She stepped closer until only he could hear.
"They weren't built to keep danger out."
"They were built to make sure danger could never escape."
Outside, the first rays of sunrise poured through the ballroom windows, replacing the cold glow of chandeliers with warm morning light.
Guests slowly realized they had not witnessed a wedding reception.
They had witnessed the final chapter of an investigation decades in the making.
Richard Hale entered through the now-open doors.
Father and daughter embraced without a word.
Some victories didn't need applause.
They only needed the truth.
As the investigators escorted the groom away, the woman glanced one last time at the towering doors.
They had never been a prison.
They had always been a courtroom.
