Chapter 2: Judgment Under Crystal Chandeliers

Chapter 2: Judgment Under Crystal Chandeliers
Within minutes, another set of doors opened.
Not the exits.
A private security corridor.
More than forty Ashford Executive Protection officers entered in perfect formation.
No weapons were drawn.
They didn't need them.
Their discipline alone silenced the room.
Behind them walked Detective Helen Carter from the Financial Crimes and Major Assault Division.
She held a thick folder.
"We have warrants."
She looked directly at my attacker.
"Assault."
"False imprisonment."
"Criminal intimidation."
"And pending financial fraud investigations."
His father pushed through the crowd.
"There must be some misunderstanding!"
"My son would never—"
Detective Carter interrupted him.
"We've been investigating your family for eighteen months."
She opened the folder.
"The assault tonight simply accelerated the timetable."
Several federal agents entered behind her.
One after another...
Phones began ringing throughout the ballroom.
Executives checked their screens.
Banks were freezing accounts.
Trading partners were terminating contracts.
Government agencies were issuing emergency subpoenas.
The empire that had taken three generations to build...
Collapsed in less than ten minutes.
The man who had struck me fell to his knees.
"I'm sorry."
"I lost my temper."
"It was one mistake."
I stared at him.
"No."
"The punch was a decision."
"The threats were decisions."
"The humiliation was a decision."
"And everyone who watched..."
I slowly turned toward the silent guests.
"...made a decision too."
Several women lowered their heads in shame.
One elderly gentleman quietly removed the charity medal from his tuxedo.
Another guest whispered,
"We should have stopped him."
Yes.
They should have.

Because evil rarely grows stronger on its own.
It survives because decent people convince themselves that someone else will act first.
