Chapter 1: Nobody Leaves

Silence lingered for only a heartbeat.

Then the ballroom erupted.

Guests pounded against the reinforced steel barriers.

Phones appeared in trembling hands.

Some demanded the police.

Others demanded lawyers.

None of the doors moved.

My attacker forced a laugh.

"This is illegal."

"You've lost your mind."

I didn't answer.

Instead, I looked toward the balcony overlooking the ballroom.

More than fifty members of the estate's executive security team entered in perfect formation.

Not one of them acknowledged the shouting.

Their attention remained fixed on me.

The commander stepped forward.

"Ma'am."

"The property is secured."

"Per your instructions, no one will enter or leave until law enforcement arrives."

The room fell silent again.

My attacker frowned.

"...Law enforcement?"

I nodded.

"I never intended to keep anyone here forever."

"I only needed to make sure no one disappeared before they gave their statements."

Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.
