Chapter 4 — The Truth About My Mother

Chapter 4 — The Truth About My Mother

Just as Damien was led away, an elderly woman stepped forward from the crowd.

She carried a worn leather folder.

"I've waited twenty-six years for this."

I recognized her immediately.

My mother's former assistant.

With trembling hands, she opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Medical reports.

Original wills.

DNA records.

And one confession.

My mother's death...

Had never been an accident.

The brakes on her car had been deliberately sabotaged.

The evidence had disappeared.

Witnesses had been bribed.

The investigation had been buried.

One family benefited from her death.

The Blackwoods.

Damien stared at his father.

"You told me she died in a crash."

His father couldn't answer.

Tears filled Damien's eyes.

"You knew?"

Silence.

"You knew?"

The old man finally whispered,

"I was protecting our family."

Damien stepped away as though looking at a stranger.
