CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO WALKED INTO HELL

CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO WALKED INTO HELL

Six hours later, Adrian returned.

He wasn't alone.

Mara walked beside him wearing a white coat.

Trying to look professional.

Trying to look innocent.

She failed.

The diamond on her finger told the real story.

“Oh,” Mara said dramatically. “She's awake.”

Adrian smiled.

“Only technically.”

My heart monitor accelerated.

Mara leaned over me.

“Lena… I want you to know we'll take excellent care of your legacy.”

Legacy.

The word nearly made me laugh.

They were talking about my life like it was a funeral arrangement.

Then the ICU doors burst open.

BANG.

Everyone jumped.

Daniel Price walked inside.

Six foot four.

Former military.

Completely expressionless.

“Get away from her.”

Adrian frowned.

“You can't just walk into an ICU.”

Daniel held up his phone.

“I can when the owner of this hospital just gave me authorization.”

Adrian's face changed.

“What?”

Daniel pulled another tablet from his jacket.

“Interesting timing.”

He looked directly at Adrian.

“Four shell companies opened in the last five months.”

Another file appeared.

“Thirty-eight million dollars transferred overseas.”

Another file.

“Medical directives forged.”

Another.

“An attempt to remove Lena's mother from all beneficiary accounts.”

Mara stepped backward.

“That's ridiculous.”

Daniel smiled.

“No.”

Then he touched the screen.

The entire wall television inside the ICU activated.

Security footage appeared.

Adrian's face drained white.

There he was.

Recorded.

Touching my breathing tube.

Trying to kill me.

Silence swallowed the room.

“Impossible,” Adrian whispered.

Daniel answered calmly.

“Nothing is impossible when the founder designed the hospital herself.”

Adrian lunged for the television.

Too late.

Three security officers entered behind Daniel.

“Mr. Adrian Carter,” one said.

“Do not leave the premises.”

For the first time since my accident…

My husband looked afraid.

But his nightmare had only just begun.

Because there was one secret he still didn't know.

I remembered everything.

Including who hit my car.
