CHAPTER 2 — THE BROKEN PROMISE

The mother was rushed to a private medical suite inside the hotel.

The baby was taken to warmth and care.

The boy refused to leave his mother’s side.

“My name is Gabriel,” he said quietly, as if the world might take even that away from him.

Isabela stood near the window, watching doctors move quickly.

“You should not have come here,” she said softly.

Gabriel clenched his fists.

“I didn’t have anywhere else.”

Silence.

Then, from the bed, a weak voice.

“Is… he safe?”

The mother had awakened slightly.

Isabela stepped closer.

“You weren’t supposed to survive that accident,” Isabela said.

The woman turned her head.

“I survived because I had to protect him.”

Gabriel froze.

“Protect me from who?” he asked.

The machines beeped softly.

And then the truth began to rise.
