chap 5 The Woman Who Stayed Silent

The Woman Who Stayed Silent
Outside the lounge, Eleanor stood hidden behind the partially opened door.
She had heard every word.
Her hands trembled.
For twenty-four years she had carried a secret that had poisoned every corner of her marriage.
She wasn't merely Richard's wife.
She had been the woman who found Julian after his mother's death.
She had begged Richard to adopt the little boy instead of abandoning him to the foster system.
Richard had agreed.
Not because he loved Julian.
Because it protected his public image.
Eleanor buried her face in her hands.
She realized she had spent decades protecting the wrong man.
Another Arrest
A loud knock interrupted the silence.
An FBI agent stepped inside.
"Mr. Sterling."
Julian looked up.
"We've located the accountant."
"The one you told us about."
"And?"
"He wants immunity."
Julian nodded slowly.
"He'll testify?"
The agent smiled.
"He already has."
"And there's something else."
"What?"
"We found another set of offshore accounts."
Julian frowned.
"Impossible."
"We emptied all of them."
The agent shook his head.
"Not these."
"They weren't in your father's name."
"They belonged to someone else."
"Who?"
The agent hesitated.
Then handed Julian a folder.
He opened it.
The signature at the bottom stopped his heart.
Eleanor Sterling.
His mother's name.
The woman who had just stood outside the door.
Julian slowly lifted his eyes.
For the first time that day...
