Chapter 8 - Daniel's Game.

Ethan reached the corridor first.

The alarm strobes painted the walls red as Ethan took the stairs two at a time.

Claire followed more carefully, one hand pressed to her injured side, furious that her body could not keep pace with her mind.

Mara shouted for everyone to stop running through an unsecured building.

Nobody listened.

At the next landing, Claire caught sight of Daniel again through the railings below.

Seeing him alive was not like recognizing someone across a room.

It was like watching a photograph step out of a frame and continue a sentence interrupted seven years earlier.

Claire remembered his funeral.

She remembered standing beneath an umbrella while rain darkened the shoulders of Ethan's suit.

Eleanor had remained beside Arthur under a black canopy.

Claire had stood alone near the edge of the cemetery because no one in the family wanted her there.

She had left before the final prayer.

For years, she believed that cowardice.

Now she understood that nearly every person at that grave had been performing around an empty truth.

Daniel reached the lower landing and looked up.

For one second, the hardened Adrian Vale persona disappeared.

Claire saw the friend who once stole fries from her plate and argued about baseball statistics with Ethan until two in the morning.

Then his face closed again.

"You shouldn't be running."

Claire almost laughed.

"That's your first sentence to me in seven years?"

"You're hurt."

"Because of a plan you designed."

Daniel flinched.

Ethan looked between them.

"She deserves answers."

Daniel's expression sharpened.

"So do you."

"Then stop running."

Daniel looked past them toward the stairwell door.

"You think I stayed alive by answering questions in hallways?"

Mara arrived and blocked the upper exit.

"You stayed alive because people broke laws to hide you."

Daniel's eyes went cold.

"And your department stayed respectable because people like my father paid to keep certain investigations quiet."

Mara's jaw tightened.

Claire stepped between the arguments before they swallowed the moment.

"Daniel, look at me."

He did.

"Did you know Eleanor would actually touch me?"

"Yes."

"Did you know I might go over the railing?"

"Not onto open air."

"That is not the same answer."

Daniel took a breath.

"The platform was supposed to deploy beneath the balcony the moment the compartment opened."

"Supposed to."

"I tested it."

"When?"

"Years ago."

Claire's anger sharpened.

"Then you tested a machine and trusted people, and somehow I became the disposable part in the middle."

Daniel looked ashamed.

That did not satisfy her.

"You owe me more than sorry."

"I know."

"Good."

She stepped aside.

"Now tell us who else knew."

That question finally pushed Daniel into explaining the fall protocol and the fact that Mercer had supposedly inspected the safety platform only weeks earlier.

Daniel was already halfway down the emergency stairwell.

"Daniel!"

The man stopped on the landing below.

He turned.

For the first time in seven years, the brothers looked directly at each other.

Daniel had changed.

His hair was shorter, his face leaner, and a pale scar cut through his left eyebrow.

But there was no mistaking him now.

Ethan gripped the railing.

"Come back."

Daniel shook his head.

"You don't know who's listening."

"I don't care."

"That's why Dad never told you."

Ethan started down the stairs.

Daniel lifted one hand.

"Stop."

"I'm not losing you again."

"You never lost me."

"You let me bury you."

Daniel's expression tightened.

"I let Dad bury a stranger so the people hunting Mom would stop looking at me."

Claire arrived behind Ethan with Detective Cole.

"Daniel."

His eyes moved to Claire.

Pain crossed his face.

"I'm sorry."

Claire stared at him.

"You planned the balcony."

"Yes."

"Eleanor pushed me because you told her to."

"Not exactly."

"Then explain exactly."

Smoke drifted into the stairwell from the damaged vault room.

Cole raised her badge.

"Daniel Blackwood, you need to come upstairs and answer questions."

Daniel almost smiled.

"Detective, if I come upstairs, someone in your department will know where I am before we reach the lobby."

Cole's face hardened.

"That's a serious accusation."

"It's also true."

He looked at Claire.

"The fall protocol was never supposed to happen the way it did."

"What was supposed to happen?"

"Eleanor was supposed to make it look like she shoved you."

Claire blinked.

"Make it look like it?"

"There was a safety platform beneath the balcony."

Ethan turned sharply.

"There is no platform."

"There was."

Daniel looked toward the upper landing.

"Someone removed it."

Claire remembered the force of Eleanor's hand.

"She actually pushed me."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Because she didn't know the platform was gone."

Ethan's anger returned.

"You gambled with Claire's life."

"I built the system myself."

"Seven years ago."

"It was inspected last month."

Everyone went silent.

Claire stared at him.

"By whom?"

Daniel answered.

"Charles Mercer."

Cole cursed softly.

Mercer had apparently been maintaining the plan while also working for Eleanor.

Or pretending to.

Daniel continued.

"The staged fall was designed to force every person connected to the old accounts into motion."

Claire understood.

"Because they would think I had recovered the recorder."

"Exactly."

"So the surveillance room, the stolen memory card, the ledger disappearing—"

"Some of it was mine."

Ethan stared at him.

"Which part?"

"The messages."

"You attacked Detective Cole?"

"No."

"You stole the memory card?"

"No."

"You planted the ledger in the vehicle?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Claire felt the pattern tighten.

Daniel had started the game, but someone else had hijacked it.

"Who removed the safety platform?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out."

Cole moved one step down.

"Then work with us."

Daniel glanced at her.

"I am."

"Running away is not working with us."

"You have a leak."

"Prove it."

Daniel removed a phone from his jacket and tossed it upward.

Cole caught it.

"Open the last message."

She did.

It contained a photograph of Cole leaving Blackwood House that morning.

Another photograph showed her car entering Manhattan.

A third showed the police laptop inside Claire's storage unit.

Cole's expression changed.

"Who sent these?"

"Unknown account."

"Why send them to you?"

"Because they know I'm watching too."

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"The case downstairs is the real target."

Claire glanced back toward the vault room.

"What's inside?"

"Arthur's confession."

Ethan's face hardened.

"About Mom?"

"About everything."

"Then help us get it."

Daniel shook his head.

"It's already gone."

A security guard shouted from above.

Cole ran back toward the vault room.

The black case had disappeared from beneath the broken glass.

A rear fire door stood open.

Someone had used the smoke and confusion to take it.

Claire turned back toward Daniel.

The stairwell was empty.

He had vanished again.

Ethan struck the railing with his palm.

"Damn it."

Claire found a folded piece of paper on the landing where Daniel had stood.

He had left it deliberately.

There was an address in Boston and a time.

11:30 PM.

Underneath were three words.

BRING ELEANOR ALONE.

They returned to Blackwood House late that afternoon.

Eleanor was still there under police supervision.

She sat at the dining table beneath the chandelier as if waiting for them.

The moment Claire entered, Eleanor looked at her bruised face.

"You know now."

Claire stopped.

"You knew there was supposed to be a platform."

Eleanor's gaze shifted to Ethan.

"Yes."

He stepped toward her.

"You pushed Claire because Daniel told you to?"

"I pushed her because the signal had to be visible."

"She nearly died."

Eleanor's composure cracked.

"I didn't know the platform was gone."

"You didn't check?"

"Mercer checked it."

Ethan laughed once, bitterly.

"You trusted Mercer?"

"Your father trusted him for thirty years."

"My father imprisoned my mother."

Eleanor flinched.

Claire saw it.

"You helped Arthur hide Katherine."

Eleanor looked at Claire.

"At first."

"What does that mean?"

"Katherine found records connecting Arthur's companies to men who were not businessmen."

Eleanor folded her hands.

"They used his shipping division to move cash across borders."

"Organized crime?"

"Arthur called them investors."

"And you?"

"I called them dangerous."

Ethan stared at her.

"Why did you help him?"

"Because I was twenty-nine and stupid enough to believe Arthur when he said Katherine would destroy all of us if she spoke."

Eleanor's voice became quieter.

"By the time I understood what he had done, Katherine had already vanished into a private facility under another name."

Claire asked.

"Why didn't you free her?"

"I tried."

Eleanor looked toward the music room.

"Daniel found out because he caught me sending her money."

Ethan's face tightened.

"The ledger entries."

"Yes."

"K.B. wasn't Dad paying to imprison her."

"Some entries were Arthur's."

"And some were yours."

Eleanor nodded.

"I paid nurses to move her."

Claire began to see why Daniel's recording had said nothing was simple.

"Why stage his death?"

"Because Daniel confronted one of Arthur's partners."

"Who?"

Eleanor hesitated.

"Vincent Carrow."

Ethan knew the name.

His face hardened.

"Carrow Shipping."

"Your father bought half his fleet."

"Carrow died ten years ago."

"His son didn't."

Claire asked.

"Who is his son?"

Eleanor looked toward the doorway.

A voice answered from behind them.

"Me."

Detective Cole stood there.

Nobody spoke.

Cole slowly removed her badge and placed it on the table.

"My name isn't Mara Cole."

Claire felt ice run through her.

"It's Mara Carrow."

Ethan stepped in front of Claire.

May you like

Cole gave a tired smile.

"And if Daniel wants Eleanor at eleven thirty tonight, I suggest we all find out why."
