Chapter 13 - The Father In The Warehouse.

For a moment, Claire thought the man had to be another illusion.

The resemblance to Ethan was stronger now than Claire remembered.

Not in the face exactly.

In the way Arthur occupied stillness as if it belonged to him.

Even handcuffs had not yet touched him, yet the room already seemed to arrange itself around his presence.

Claire understood immediately how a man like Arthur could mistake influence for love.

People moved when he expected them to move.

They lowered their voices when he lowered his.

They called obedience loyalty because the alternative was admitting fear.

Ethan did not move toward his father.

That surprised Arthur.

Claire saw it.

"You thought he'd come to you."

Arthur looked at her.

"Claire Bennett."

"Still good with names."

"I remember the people I wronged."

Claire's anger sharpened.

"That sounds almost noble when you say it slowly."

Arthur accepted the insult.

"I don't expect you to forgive me."

"Good."

"I separated you from Ethan because Daniel had already involved you."

"You mean because you couldn't control me."

Arthur's expression changed slightly.

Claire knew she had found the truer answer.

"You had no family leverage over me."

"No."

"No company shares."

"No."

"No trust fund."

"No."

"So you used Eleanor to make Ethan reject me instead."

Arthur looked toward his son.

"I believed distance would protect both of you."

Ethan finally spoke.

"Stop using that word."

Arthur turned.

"What word?"

"Protect."

Ethan stepped forward.

"You imprisoned Mom to protect us."

"You erased Daniel to protect him."

"You destroyed Claire and me to protect us."

His voice stayed controlled, which made the fury inside it more powerful.

"Every time you say protection, what you mean is that you wanted the outcome without asking anyone else what they were willing to lose."

Arthur stared at him.

For perhaps the first time, Claire saw the older man without an immediate answer.

Katherine did.

"He learned that from me."

Arthur looked at her.

Katherine shook her head.

"No."

"He learned what not to become by surviving you."

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

The warehouse felt less like a reunion than an autopsy of a family structure.

Claire realized that was necessary.

They could not build anything from the truth until they stopped decorating the damage.

Then Mercer admitted removing the platform, and the emotional reckoning became a criminal one again.

Arthur Blackwood had been buried three years earlier beneath a granite stone bearing his name, his dates, and a line about honor that now felt almost obscene.

Yet he stood beneath the warehouse lights with silver hair, a thinner face, and the same severe eyes Claire remembered from years ago.

Ethan stopped so suddenly Daniel nearly ran into him.

"Dad?"

Arthur's expression broke at the sound of his son's voice.

Not with joy.

With resignation.

"Ethan."

Daniel stared at him.

"You were dead."

Arthur looked at both sons.

"That was necessary."

Daniel laughed once, a harsh sound filled with disbelief.

"Of course it was."

Voss still had one hand around Katherine's arm.

Mercer kept the gun trained on him.

Federal agents were moving somewhere outside the warehouse, but Arthur lifted a hand.

"Nobody comes closer."

Mara appeared near the doorway with her weapon ready.

"You don't give orders here."

Arthur looked at her and recognized her instantly.

"Vincent's daughter."

Mara's eyes hardened.

"You remember me."

"I remember everyone I failed."

"That's a convenient thing to say after faking your own death."

Arthur accepted the accusation without flinching.

Ethan took one step forward.

"You let us bury you."

Arthur's voice became quiet.

"I needed Gideon to believe I was gone."

"You needed everyone to believe you were gone."

"Yes."

"Including us."

"Especially you."

Daniel shook his head.

"There it is again."

Arthur looked at him.

"What?"

"The part where you call betrayal protection."

Claire felt those words move through the entire room.

Every major wound in the Blackwood family had been justified that way.

Katherine finally spoke.

"Arthur never protected anyone he could control instead."

Arthur looked at her.

For the first time, his face showed genuine pain.

"Katherine."

"Don't say my name like you still own it."

Voss smiled faintly.

"Touching."

Mercer tightened his grip on the gun.

"Let her go."

Voss looked at him.

"You've been taking my money for thirty years."

Mercer's face twisted.

"And cleaning up your disasters."

"You removed the platform."

Claire said it before anyone else could.

Mercer turned toward her.

His eyes filled with shame.

"Yes."

Ethan moved instantly.

Arthur stepped between them.

"Ethan."

"He almost killed Claire."

"I know."

"Then move."

"If you attack him, Voss wins."

Ethan stared at his father.

"You don't get to tell me what winning looks like."

Claire touched Ethan's arm.

Not to protect Mercer.

To keep Ethan from doing something that would turn the truth into another act of violence.

He looked at her and stopped.

Claire faced Mercer.

"Why did you remove it?"

Mercer swallowed.

"Voss found out about the fall protocol."

"How?"

"Martin Hale."

Claire's stomach dropped.

"Martin worked for Voss?"

"Not willingly."

Mercer lowered the gun slightly but kept it pointed at Voss.

"Voss threatened Martin's daughter."

"So Martin told him about Daniel's plan."

"Enough of it."

"And Voss ordered you to remove the platform."

Mercer nodded.

"He wanted Claire's death blamed on Eleanor."

Eleanor, who had arrived with agents behind Mara, went completely still.

Mercer looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

"You inspected it for me."

"I lied."

Eleanor's voice shook.

"I pushed her because you told me it was safe."

Mercer closed his eyes.

"I know."

Eleanor crossed the distance between them and slapped him.

The sound cracked through the warehouse.

No one stopped her.

She stepped back immediately.

"That is the last thing I will ever do because a man told me it was necessary."

Claire watched Eleanor and felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Voss suddenly pulled Katherine closer.

"Enough family therapy."

He looked at Arthur.

"You have the real account map."

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"Eleanor does."

"Not anymore."

Claire realized Arthur was looking at her.

Voss followed his gaze.

His expression changed.

"You gave it to Claire."

Arthur smiled slightly.

"No."

Claire understood.

The original drive Eleanor had carried was only one layer.

Arthur had fragmented the evidence beyond even Eleanor's knowledge.

Voss's voice hardened.

"Then where is it?"

Arthur looked toward Katherine.

"With the only person I could never outsmart."

Katherine laughed bitterly.

"Flattery is twenty-six years late."

She pulled away from Voss unexpectedly.

He grabbed for her.

Daniel moved.

Mara shouted.

Mercer fired into the ceiling.

The explosion of sound froze everyone for half a second.

Katherine dropped to the floor and rolled behind a stack of crates.

Federal agents rushed in.

Voss ran deeper into the warehouse.

Daniel chased him.

Ethan followed.

Claire heard Mara order them to stop, but neither brother listened.

Arthur remained where he was.

He did not follow his sons.

That told Claire something.

"You expected this."

Arthur looked at her.

"I expected Gideon to run."

"Where?"

"Toward the water."

Claire's pulse accelerated.

"What's at the water?"

Arthur looked toward the rear doors.

"The last copy."

Claire ran.

Pain ripped through her ribs again, but she followed Ethan and Daniel through the warehouse toward the docks.

Voss reached a narrow loading platform above the harbor.

A motorboat waited below.

He jumped onto the stairs.

Daniel caught his jacket.

Voss spun and struck him.

Daniel lost his footing.

Ethan grabbed Daniel's arm before he fell between the dock and the boat.

For one terrible second, Ethan was stretched between saving his brother and stopping Voss.

Claire saw the choice on his face.

Seven years earlier, he might have chased the truth.

Now he pulled Daniel to safety.

Voss escaped onto the boat.

The engine roared.

Then stopped.

Arthur had removed the fuel line.

Voss looked back toward the dock.

Arthur stood there beside Mara and three agents.

"You were always predictable, Gideon."

Voss laughed from the dead boat.

"And you were always a coward."

Arthur's face went still.

"Yes."

The admission surprised everyone.

"I was."

Agents boarded the boat and placed Voss in handcuffs.

He did not resist.

As he passed Arthur, he whispered something Claire could not hear.

Arthur's face changed.

Mara noticed.

"What did he say?"

Arthur did not answer.

Katherine walked onto the dock behind them.

"He said the same thing he has said for thirty years."

Arthur looked at her.

Katherine continued.

"That Arthur is worse than he is."

Claire watched Arthur carefully.

"Is he wrong?"

The question silenced the dock.

Ethan turned toward Claire, then toward his father.

Arthur looked older than he had inside the warehouse.

"No."

Ethan's face hardened.

"What haven't you told us?"

Arthur looked at Mara.

"Vincent Carrow's death wasn't ordered by Gideon alone."

Mara went pale.

"What are you saying?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I approved it."

Mara's weapon rose.

Federal agents stepped between them.

Arthur did not move.

"Your father threatened to expose all of us."

Mara's voice shook.

"So you killed him."

"I told Gideon to stop him."

"You knew what that meant."

"Yes."

Ethan stared at his father with horror.

"And Mom?"

Arthur looked at Katherine.

"I imprisoned her because she knew."

Daniel stepped back as if the man in front of him were a stranger.

Arthur continued.

"I staged Daniel's death because by then I was trying to undo what I had done without getting him killed."

"You don't get credit for fixing a fire you started."

Daniel's voice was flat.

"I know."

Mara looked at the agents.

"Arrest him."

Arthur held out his hands.

"That's why I'm here."

As the cuffs closed around Arthur's wrists, Claire thought the story might finally be ending.

Then Katherine looked at her and said quietly.

"No."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

"Arthur's confession is not the final truth."

Katherine reached into her coat and removed a small brass key identical to the one Claire had received.

"The final truth is back at Blackwood House."

Ethan stared at the key.

"Where?"

May you like

Katherine looked at him.

"Under the place Claire nearly died."
