Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Letter

The cabin fell silent.

Not the peaceful silence Martha had experienced during the long journey through the mountains.

This was different.

This silence carried danger.

The kind of silence that came before something broke.

Martha stood near the wooden table, staring at Magnus Hale.

Only moments earlier, she had believed she understood him.

A harsh man.

A lonely man.

A man shaped by years of wilderness and hardship.

But now...

A stranger outside had called her something she could not ignore.

A woman he bought.

The words burned.

They felt heavier than the cold mountain air.

Magnus kept his rifle raised toward the door.

His jaw tightened beneath his thick beard.

"Who is he?"

Martha asked.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Magnus knew that tone.

It was the tone of someone trying desperately not to show they were hurt.

"His name is Caleb Voss."

"Should I know him?"

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Martha stared at him.

"You keep saying things like that."

Magnus did not look away from the door.

"Because you don't need to know everything."

A bitter laugh escaped her.

"I crossed half the country to marry a stranger."

She stepped closer.

"I think I deserve to know something."

The pounding on the door came again.

Harder.

The wooden frame shook.

"Magnus!"

Caleb's voice echoed through the cabin.

"You know I won't leave."

Magnus's eyes darkened.

Martha noticed the change.

The name.

The voice.

They meant something.

"You know him."

Magnus remained silent.

"You know him."

This time, it was not a question.

The mountain man slowly lowered the rifle.

Not because the danger was gone.

Because he knew the truth could no longer stay hidden.

"Yes."

Martha waited.

"Then tell me."

Magnus looked at the floor.

For a moment, he looked less like a dangerous mountain man.

He looked tired.

A man carrying something too heavy for too long.

"Caleb Voss used to work the trading routes between Colorado and Missouri."

"And?"

"He knows people."

Martha crossed her arms.

"That tells me nothing."

Magnus looked at her.

"He arranged the marriage."

The room seemed to shrink.

Martha stared.

"What?"

"The letters."

Her face changed.

"The advertisement."

The silence that followed felt like an explosion.

Martha took one slow step backward.

"You arranged it?"

Magnus did not answer immediately.

That was enough.

Her expression hardened.

"You didn't find me."

"No."

"You paid someone to find a wife."

"No."

The contradiction confused her.

"Then explain."

Magnus rubbed his hand across his beard.

A rare sign of uncertainty.

"I asked for help."

"From him?"

"Yes."

"And why?"

The question hung between them.

Why her?

Why a woman from Cincinnati?

Why someone who had never seen this place?

Magnus looked toward the window.

Snow fell softly outside.

"I needed someone strong."

Martha felt something inside her break.

Not because it was cruel.

Because she feared it was true.

Strong.

That was always the word people used.

Never beautiful.

Never gentle.

Never wanted.

Strong.

"Is that all I am to you?"

Magnus looked back.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

But Martha was not convinced.

"You barely know me."

"I know enough."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You don't know anything."

Magnus stepped closer.

"You stood alone in a freezing valley for twenty minutes because you refused to admit you were cold."

She said nothing.

"You dragged your own trunk across a train platform when men offered to help because you didn't want their pity."

Her expression softened slightly.

"You climbed that mountain today without asking for a single favor."

He paused.

"Most people would have given up."

The cabin became quiet.

Martha hated that his words affected her.

She hated that a man she barely knew saw things others ignored.

Then...

The door shook again.

Caleb's voice returned.

"You have five minutes, Magnus."

Martha looked toward the door.

"What does he want?"

Magnus's face became cold again.

"He wants something that belongs to me."

"What?"

Magnus looked at her.

The answer came slowly.

"You."

The word landed like a stone.

Martha froze.

"What?"

"He believes I broke our agreement."

"Our agreement?"

Magnus looked away.

"I paid him to arrange the marriage."

Her stomach tightened.

"You said you asked for help."

"I did."

"But you paid him."

"Yes."

The truth hurt more because it was simple.

Martha had spent years being treated like an object.

A curiosity.

A problem.

And now...

She wondered if she had become one again.

Magnus saw the change in her face.

"Martha."

"No."

Her voice was quiet.

"Don't."

She walked toward the window.

Outside, the mountains stretched endlessly.

Beautiful.

Cold.

Unforgiving.

"Did you ever intend to tell me?"

Magnus did not answer.

That was the answer.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time since arriving, she felt something worse than fear.

She felt disappointment.

Then a strange sound interrupted them.

Not a knock.

Not a voice.

A gunshot.

The cabin window shattered.

Martha screamed as glass exploded across the room.

Magnus moved instantly.

He grabbed her and pulled her down behind the table.

The rifle fired back toward the darkness.

Another shot answered.

The mountain exploded with noise.

Martha pressed against the wooden floor, her heart racing.

Magnus covered her with his body.

Not thinking.

Not hesitating.

Just protecting her.

When the shooting stopped, the cabin became silent again.

Martha looked up.

Magnus was above her.

His face inches away.

His eyes searched hers.

"Are you hurt?"

She stared at him.

At the man she was angry with.

The man who had hidden the truth.

The man who had just risked his life for hers.

"I'm fine."

Magnus slowly moved away.

But Martha noticed something.

Blood.

A thin line of red ran down his shoulder.

"You were shot."

"It's nothing."

"It is not nothing."

He ignored the wound.

Instead, he looked toward the broken window.

Caleb was not trying to scare them.

He was trying to send a message.

Martha slowly stood.

Her anger was still there.

Her questions were still there.

But now there was something else.

A dangerous realization.

Someone wanted her.

And Magnus Hale was the only thing standing between her and them.

Then Caleb's voice came from the darkness.

"You can protect her tonight, Magnus."

A pause.

"But tomorrow..."

The wind carried his final words through the trees.

"She'll learn why you really chose her."

Martha looked at Magnus.

The mountain man said nothing.

Because whatever secret Caleb knew...

May you like

Magnus was afraid Martha would believe it.

To be continued...
