Chapter 11 - The Mountain Buried Its Secrets

The mountain screamed.
The sound was not like thunder.
It was deeper.
Older.
Like the earth itself was cracking open beneath their feet.
Dust poured from the ceiling of the hidden chamber.
Pieces of stone fell around them.
The lantern flame shook violently.
Martha Bell stumbled backward.
For a moment, she forgot about the secrets.
Forgot about the betrayal.
Forgot about the questions that had haunted her since arriving in Colorado.
There was only one thing left.
Survival.
Magnus grabbed her arm.
"Move."
This time, she did not argue.
Not because she trusted him completely.
Not because all the pain had disappeared.
But because when the mountain began collapsing...
Magnus Hale was still the man standing between her and death.
Caleb Voss rushed toward the exit.
His confidence disappeared.
The calm smile vanished.
For the first time, Martha saw something unexpected.
Fear.
"You didn't tell me the tunnel would collapse!"
Caleb shouted.
Magnus looked at him coldly.
"You never asked."
Another explosion shook the chamber.
The wooden supports above them cracked.
Elias grabbed the leather pouch containing the documents.
"We need to leave now."
Martha looked around.
"The tunnel is blocked."
Magnus scanned the room.
His eyes moved quickly.
Calculating.
Searching.
Finding a way.
"There is another exit."
Martha stared.
"Of course there is."
The words came out bitterly.
"Another secret."
Magnus looked at her.
She expected anger.
Instead...
He nodded.
"Yes."
The honesty caught her off guard.
"I have spent my whole life hiding things."
A piece of stone crashed nearby.
"But not because I wanted power."
His eyes met hers.
"Because every person who knew the truth became a target."
Martha looked away.
The words hurt because they sounded true.
Another collapse shook the chamber.
Magnus moved toward the far wall.
He pressed his hand against the stone.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The wall opened.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Caleb stared.
"You built all of this?"
Magnus didn't look at him.
"No."
A pause.
"Your father did."
Martha froze.
"My father?"
Magnus nodded.
"He knew one day someone would come looking."
The passage opened fully.
Inside were old wooden steps leading downward.
Martha stared into the darkness.
"Where does it go?"
Magnus picked up the lantern.
"Somewhere Blackridge never found."
Caleb laughed quietly.
"You really believe that?"
Everyone looked at him.
Caleb stood near the collapsing chamber.
Dust covered his coat.
His face was no longer confident.
But his eyes were still dangerous.
"You think you won?"
Magnus raised his rifle.
"You're done."
Caleb smiled.
"No."
He looked at Martha.
"She still doesn't know."
Martha's expression hardened.
"Know what?"
Caleb looked directly at Magnus.
"Tell her."
Magnus remained silent.
The silence was enough.
Again.
Martha's patience broke.
"What are you hiding now?"
Magnus looked away.
"Martha."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You promised."
A pause.
"You said you would tell me everything."
The mountain shook.
Time was running out.
Magnus closed his eyes.
Then spoke.
"Your father wasn't only investigating Blackridge."
Martha waited.
"He was investigating me."
The words froze her.
"What?"
Caleb smiled.
"There it is."
Magnus continued.
"Your father believed I was connected to Blackridge."
Martha stared.
"Were you?"
The question was quiet.
But devastating.
Magnus looked at her.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
"But I had worked for them before."
The room went silent.
Martha felt the air leave her lungs.
"What?"
"Before I knew what they were doing."
Magnus's voice became heavier.
"I was young."
"I needed money."
"I thought I was protecting people."
He looked down.
"I was wrong."
Martha stared at him.
"You worked for them."
"Yes."
The honesty hurt.
"But when I discovered the truth, I left."
"And my father?"
"He found out."
"Did he forgive you?"
Magnus didn't answer.
Martha understood.
That was the wound.
The thing he carried.
"He trusted me enough to die believing I could fix it."
A tear appeared in Martha's eye.
Not because she felt sorry for him.
Because she finally understood.
Magnus Hale was not haunted by what he had done.
He was haunted by what he failed to prevent.
Another explosion interrupted them.
Elias shouted:
"The chamber is collapsing!"
Magnus grabbed the lantern.
"Everyone into the passage."
Caleb moved too.
Magnus immediately pointed the rifle.
"No."
Caleb smiled.
"You need me."
Nobody answered.
Because they all knew.
The old documents.
The map.
The information.
Caleb knew parts of the truth.
Magnus hated it.
But it was true.
Martha stepped forward.
"Let him come."
Magnus looked at her.
"Martha."
She held his gaze.
"If he knows something about my father..."
A pause.
"I want answers."
Magnus studied her.
Then slowly lowered the rifle.
"Stay close."
They entered the hidden passage.
The stone door closed behind them.
The sound of the collapsing chamber faded.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Only footsteps.
Only breathing.
Only the sound of the mountain above them.
Then Caleb spoke.
"You know, Martha..."
She ignored him.
But he continued.
"Your father always believed people could change."
Magnus stopped walking.
Caleb smiled.
"That was his weakness."
Martha looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Caleb looked at Magnus.
"He believed Magnus could become a better man."
A pause.
"He was wrong."
Magnus turned.
"Enough."
Caleb laughed.
"Still protecting her from the truth."
Martha stepped between them.
"No."
Both men looked at her.
She held the leather pouch tightly.
"I am done being protected."
Her voice echoed through the tunnel.
"I want every truth."
Nobody spoke.
Then Caleb smiled.
"Good."
He stepped closer.
"Because the biggest one is still waiting."
Martha's heartbeat increased.
"What biggest one?"
Caleb looked at Magnus.
Then whispered:
"Your father did not die alone."
The tunnel went silent.
Magnus's face changed.
A flash of pain.
A memory.
A secret.
Martha turned toward him.
"Who was with him?"
Magnus said nothing.
Caleb answered.
"You."
The word echoed.
Martha stared.
"No."
Caleb continued.
"Magnus was the last person to see your father alive."
She looked at Magnus.
The man she had started to understand.
The man she had started to trust.
And once again...
The ground beneath her world shifted.
"Is that true?"
Magnus looked at her.
His silence was unbearable.
Finally...
He whispered:
"Yes."
Martha stepped backward.
The tunnel felt colder.
Because the question she had feared most...
Was finally answered.
Magnus Hale had not just known her father.
He had been there when he died.
And now she needed to know one thing.
May you like
Why.
To be continued...
