Before anyone could speak again, the ultrasound monitor suddenly displayed the baby's heartbeat.
Fast.
Strong.
Then the technician frowned.
"Doctor..."
He leaned toward the screen.
Something wasn't right.
"There appears to be fresh trauma near the placenta."
The older woman grabbed the side of the bed.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor swallowed hard.
"If she's struck again..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
The technician did.
"The baby may not survive."
The young mother's eyes overflowed with tears.
"My baby..."
The doctor removed his gloves and looked directly at her.
"I failed you once."
"I won't do it again."
He picked up the phone.
"This is Dr. Collins."
"I need hospital security."
"And call the police."
Minutes later, security officers entered the clinic.
At almost the same moment, Daniel burst through the waiting room doors.
"Emily!"
His smile vanished when he saw the officers.
"There you are, sweetheart."
He reached toward her.
She pulled away.
For the first time in years.
"No."
One simple word.
But it shattered every ounce of control he had over her.
Daniel's expression twisted with rage.
"You belong with me."
