Chapter 1: The Ultrasound That Was Never About the Baby

The room fell silent.

The doctor stared at the older woman, his hand frozen above the ultrasound machine.

"I... I don't understand what you're talking about."

The older woman stepped closer, her voice low but razor sharp.

"Don't lie to me."

She reached into her purse and pulled out a folded medical report.

"I requested my daughter's records from the emergency room she visited six weeks ago."

The doctor's face lost all color.

The pregnant woman looked back and forth between them, confused.

"Mom... what records?"

The older woman's eyes filled with tears.

"You told me you slipped in the bathroom."

The young woman nodded weakly.

"That's what Daniel said happened."

The older woman slammed the report onto the examination table.

"The injuries weren't from a fall."

She pointed at the highlighted paragraphs.

"They were repeated blunt-force injuries."

The doctor's breathing became uneven.

"You examined her."

"You knew."

The patient slowly looked at the doctor.

"...Is she telling the truth?"

He couldn't answer.

The silence became the answer.

Finally, he whispered,

"Your husband asked me not to report it."

The pregnant woman felt as if the room had disappeared beneath her.

"What...?"

"He said you were under a lot of stress."

"He promised it would never happen again."

"He made a generous donation to the hospital."

The young woman's hands began shaking uncontrollably.

Every bruise.

Every apology.

Every excuse.

None of it had been an accident.

She had been betrayed by the one place she thought would protect her.

And now she realized she wasn't only afraid for herself.

She was afraid for her unborn daughter.
