Three months later, the courtroom was packed.
Vanessa arrived wearing another expensive red dress.
This time, no one admired it.
The prosecution presented every piece of evidence.
The forged documents.
The surveillance footage.
The financial records.
The medical reports proving Grandma had never suffered from the mental illness Vanessa claimed.
Then they showed photographs of the dog crate.
The courtroom fell silent.
Several jurors looked away.
Vanessa's confident smile never returned.
She was found guilty of elder abuse, fraud, forgery, financial exploitation, and obstruction.
The judge called her actions "calculated cruelty driven by greed."
She was sentenced to years in prison and ordered to repay every stolen dollar.
As deputies led her away, she finally looked at me.
