Chapter 1: The Hidden Room

The upstairs floor creaked.

Every eye in the house turned toward the guest room.

Vanessa's twenty-three-year-old son, Ethan, stepped into the hallway. His face had gone completely pale. He clutched a thick brown envelope against his chest like it weighed a hundred pounds.

Vanessa's voice cracked for the first time.

"Ethan... come downstairs."

He didn't move.

Instead, he looked at me.

"I didn't know," he whispered. "She told me Dad wanted everything hidden until you came back."

The envelope slipped from his hands.

Papers scattered across the hardwood floor.

Marcus hurried upstairs while I followed.

Inside the envelope were my father's original will, notarized property records, medical reports, and a handwritten journal.

The forged documents downstairs had transferred nearly everything to Vanessa.

The originals told a very different story.

My father had placed the estate into a family trust controlled jointly by Grandma and me.

Vanessa wasn't supposed to inherit the house.

She was only granted a temporary right to live there until I returned from deployment.

Grandma quietly pointed toward the tiny brass key resting in my hand.

"It opens the old bank deposit box," she whispered.

"The one your father never told Vanessa about."
