Chapter 2: The Truth Finally Comes Out

Chapter 2: The Truth Finally Comes Out
The next morning, my phone rang before sunrise.
It was my mother.
I let it go to voicemail.
Then came another call.
And another.
Finally, a text appeared.
"I hope you're happy. Your wife destroyed this family."
I stared at the screen for a long moment before setting the phone down.
Emily noticed.
"You don't have to answer."
"I know."
An hour later, our neighbor, Mrs. Carter, knocked on the door carrying homemade soup for Leo.
As she stepped inside, she looked surprised.
"Your mother left already?"
"Yes."
Mrs. Carter hesitated.
"I probably shouldn't say this..."
I smiled gently.
"If there's something I need to know, please tell me."
She sighed.
"Every afternoon while you were away, I saw Emily carrying groceries, taking out the trash, walking the dog, and trying to calm Leo. Meanwhile, your mother and sister spent hours sitting on the patio drinking tea."
Emily lowered her eyes.
Mrs. Carter continued.
"I offered to help several times, but your mother always said, 'Emily needs to learn how to manage a household.'"
My chest tightened.
Emily had never complained.
Not once.
She had protected me from worrying while I was away working to support all of us.
That afternoon I reviewed the security camera footage from our front porch.
Everything Mrs. Carter had said was true.
Every single day.
Emily struggled alone while the people I trusted most ignored her.
I deleted the guilt I'd been carrying for not seeing it sooner.
Then I blocked my mother and sister's numbers.
Not out of anger.
Out of peace.
That evening, Emily smiled for the first time in what felt like forever.
It was small.
Tired.
May you like
But real.
And it reminded me exactly what was worth protecting.
