Chapter 1: The Line That Changed Everything
"You've been sitting here watching my wife drown," I said, my voice calm enough to make the room feel colder. "Pack your things. You are leaving my house tonight."
The smile disappeared from my mother's face.
"What?" she asked, blinking in disbelief.
"You heard me."
My sister pulled one earbud out. "Are you serious?"
"I've never been more serious in my life."
My mother stood slowly, offended. "After everything I've done for you? This is how you repay me?"
I looked at Emily, who was still crying quietly against my shoulder while Leo whimpered in my arms.
"Everything you've done?" I repeated. "I came home expecting to find you helping my wife. Instead, I found her caring for a sick toddler, cooking dinner, cleaning the house, doing laundry, unpacking groceries, and taking care of the dog—all while the two of you sat there like guests at a hotel."
"We were giving her space," my sister muttered.
"No," I answered. "You were giving yourselves an excuse."
My mother's expression hardened.
"Emily never asked for help."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"She shouldn't have had to ask."
Silence filled the room.
I walked to the front door and opened it.
"You both have ten minutes."
My mother shook her head.
"She's turning you against your own family."
I met her eyes without hesitation.
"No. She showed me who my family really is."
For the first time in my life, my mother had nothing to say.
Ten minutes later, they were gone.
The house became quieter than it had been all week.
Emily looked at me with red, swollen eyes.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"The only person who should be apologizing isn't here anymore."
That night, after Leo's fever finally came down and he fell asleep between us, Emily reached for my hand in the darkness.
"I kept thinking I just needed to try harder," she admitted.
I squeezed her hand.
