Part 2 – The Knock at the Door

Part 2 – The Knock at the Door

The doorbell rang only once.

No one moved.

I shifted Leo carefully in my arms while Sophia struggled to sit up. Her entire body trembled, but the moment she saw the determination on my face, a flicker of hope replaced the fear in her eyes.

I opened the front door.

Three people stood on the porch.

A Military Police investigator.

A Child Protective Services caseworker.

And my attorney, Daniel Harper.

Behind them waited two marked police vehicles and an ambulance.

Eleanor forced an uneasy laugh.

"Lucas... surely this is unnecessary."

Daniel stepped inside without acknowledging her.

"Mrs. Eleanor Carter, this property is legally owned by the Carter Family Military Trust under Captain Lucas Carter."

He handed her several documents.

"Effective immediately, your permission to reside here has been revoked."

Eleanor barely glanced at the papers before crumpling them in her hand.

"You can't throw me out of my own son's house!"

"I already have," I answered calmly.

The CPS investigator approached the crib.

She documented every bottle of spoiled formula, every dirty diaper piled in the trash, every empty medicine container.

Then she looked at Sophia.

"When was the last time you received medical treatment?"

Sophia whispered, "I... I don't remember."

The investigator's expression hardened.

The military officer walked toward me.

"Captain Carter, we've reviewed the preliminary evidence you submitted before returning from deployment."

I nodded.

"There will be more."

Audrey suddenly pointed at Sophia.

"She's lying! She bruises easily! She's unstable!"

Daniel quietly placed a flash drive on the dining table.

"We'll let the security footage answer that."

Eleanor's face drained of color.

"The cameras don't work."

"They did."

The room fell silent.

On the television, footage from the nursery appeared.

Everyone watched as Eleanor ripped Sophia's phone from her hands.

Another clip showed Audrey locking the front door while Sophia begged to take Leo to the emergency room.

Another showed Eleanor grabbing Sophia by both arms hard enough to leave bruises.

No one spoke.

The only sound came from Leo's weak coughing.

The CPS investigator closed her notebook.

"I've seen enough."

Within minutes, Eleanor and Audrey were escorted outside while officers photographed the injuries throughout the home.

Neither woman looked nearly as confident as they had ten minutes earlier.
