Chapter 3: A Promise Rewarded

The man walked toward the maid and Noah.

Noah still refused to let go of her hand.

"I'm sorry," the maid whispered. "I thought he was hurt."

"He was," the man replied gently.

"Just not physically."

He knelt beside his son.

"Noah, why did you run to Miss Grace?"

The little boy looked up through watery eyes.

"Because everyone else was watching..."

"...but she came to help."

The maid began to cry.

She had worked for the family for nearly eight years.

She remembered every birthday.

Every nightmare.

Every scraped knee.

Every bedtime story Noah had asked her to read when his parents were too busy.

The man stood and addressed everyone once more.

"Love isn't measured by titles."

"It's measured by who stays when no one is watching."

Then he turned back to Grace.

"Starting today, you're no longer an employee."

"You are officially Noah's legal guardian if anything ever happens to me."

Gasps echoed throughout the reception.

Grace covered her mouth in disbelief.
