Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Test

Silence settled over the garden as every guest stared at the little boy clinging to the maid's uniform.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The wealthy man slowly wiped away his tears before looking around at the people who had proudly called themselves family and friends.

"You all asked why I arranged tonight's gathering," he said, his voice calm but firm. "Now you have your answer."

The guests exchanged uneasy glances.

The boy, Noah, buried his face against the maid's shoulder, refusing to let go.

The maid looked confused.

"Sir... I don't understand."

The man smiled sadly.

"For the past year, everyone kept telling me they loved my son. They bought him expensive gifts. They promised they'd always protect him."

He paused.

"So tonight, I wanted to see who he would run to when he believed he was scared and alone."

His eyes rested on the maid.

"And he chose the one person who never asked for anything in return."

The crowd lowered their heads in embarrassment.

The expensive gifts suddenly seemed meaningless.
