Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Became the Victim.

Victoria's decision to transform herself from aggressor into victim was not improvised as badly as Charlotte first hoped.

The red mark on her wrist had been placed carefully where cameras might capture it.

Her voice softened around police officers.

Her posture changed from commanding to guarded.

Even the angle of her chair made her look smaller.

Charlotte recognized the strategy because wealthy families often hired consultants to teach executives how to survive public scandals.

The trick was never to win every fact.

The trick was to make certainty expensive.

If observers became unsure who started the confrontation, then both sides could be called problematic.

If Charlotte became angry, Victoria could call the anger proof.

If Charlotte remained calm, Victoria could call it calculated.

There was no perfect performance that could defeat a lie designed to reinterpret every reaction.

Only evidence could do that.

Which was why Noah's ordinary phone suddenly mattered more than every polished statement Adrian had prepared.

Two uniformed police officers waited in the private reception salon off the main lobby.

Victoria Ashford sat between them like a wounded queen receiving condolences.

Her black dress was immaculate.

Her makeup was flawless.

A faint red mark had appeared on her wrist that Charlotte was certain had not existed before.

Adrian stood behind her with the expression of a man reluctantly cooperating with an unpleasant situation.

Richard Crowe had not yet appeared.

That absence bothered Charlotte more than if he had been waiting in the center of the room.

The older officer, Sergeant Dana Keller, looked at Charlotte's scraped palm and split lip before speaking.

"Ms. Vale?"

Victoria made a small sound of disbelief.

"That is not her name."

Dana looked at her.

"Ma'am, I'll speak to everyone separately."

Victoria leaned back, offended by the concept of procedure.

Charlotte almost respected the officer for surviving the look.

Marcus stepped forward.

"I witnessed the initial contact."

Dana nodded.

"We'll get your statement."

Adrian interrupted.

"Mr. Reed has been suspended for misconduct."

Dana looked at him.

"Was he suspended before or after he said he witnessed the incident?"

Adrian paused.

Charlotte watched his jaw tighten.

"After."

Dana wrote something down.

Victoria turned on Charlotte.

"She came at me like an animal."

Charlotte said nothing.

"She grabbed my arm."

Charlotte still said nothing.

"She threatened to destroy me."

Dana looked at Charlotte.

"Did you threaten her?"

Charlotte answered carefully.

"I told her she had made the worst mistake of her life after she shoved me onto the floor."

Victoria scoffed.

"Listen to her."

"I am listening," Dana said.

The second officer, Luis Ortega, examined the room while Dana questioned them.

His gaze paused on a security camera above the door.

"We'll need footage."

Adrian shook his head with practiced regret.

"Unfortunately, there was a technical failure."

Charlotte laughed once.

Dana looked at her.

"Something funny?"

"The system failed thirty seconds after my security officer tried to preserve the footage."

Adrian corrected her.

"He is not your security officer."

Charlotte turned to him.

"You really need a second sentence."

Dana raised a hand.

"Everyone stop."

She faced Marcus.

"Did you preserve video?"

"I exported it to a secure drive."

"Where is it?"

Marcus handed over the flash drive.

Ortega tested it on a police laptop.

After a moment, he shook his head.

"File system is damaged."

Victoria's mouth curved.

Charlotte saw it.

Dana saw it too.

"Is there any other recording?" Dana asked.

Charlotte remembered the guest near the elevators holding up his phone.

"Yes."

She turned toward the glass doors separating the salon from the lobby.

The guest was gone.

Her stomach dropped.

"There was a man recording."

Adrian spread his hands.

"Hotels are full of phones."

"He was standing beside the east elevators."

Dana nodded to Ortega.

"See if front desk can identify him from check-in records."

Adrian stepped forward.

"We cannot disclose guest information without legal process."

Dana gave him a tired look.

"I know how warrants work, Mr. Kessler."

Charlotte watched the balance shift slightly.

Adrian was accustomed to controlling employees.

He was less comfortable with someone who did not care about his title.

Victoria noticed too.

She changed tactics.

Her voice softened.

"Officer, I realize this woman may truly believe she is Charlotte Vale."

Charlotte felt the trap before Victoria finished setting it.

"But the real Charlotte has been receiving treatment since her mother's death."

Marcus turned sharply.

"Treatment for what?"

Victoria looked almost compassionate.

"Severe emotional instability."

Charlotte stared at her.

That lie was new.

Adrian stepped forward with a leather folder.

Too quickly.

Prepared.

"We didn't want to disclose private medical matters," he said.

"But given the circumstances, perhaps it is necessary."

He handed Dana a document.

Charlotte crossed the room.

"What is that?"

Dana read silently.

Her expression became guarded.

"It's a petition for temporary guardianship."

Charlotte's body went cold.

"Over whom?"

Dana looked at her.

"Charlotte Elise Vale."

Victoria folded her hands in her lap.

Charlotte took the paper from Dana before anyone could stop her.

The petition claimed Charlotte had suffered a psychiatric breakdown after Eleanor's death.

It claimed she had become paranoid, impulsive, and unable to manage financial affairs.

It requested temporary control of her business interests be assigned to Richard Crowe until a competency hearing.

The supporting declaration carried a physician's name Charlotte had never seen.

Then she reached the signature page.

Her own signature appeared at the bottom beneath a line stating she consented to evaluation.

Charlotte's vision blurred with fury.

"This is forged."

Victoria sighed.

"Everything is forged when it doesn't fit your story."

Charlotte looked at Dana.

"Check the filing date."

Dana did.

"April 2."

"I was in Boston on April 2."

Adrian shrugged.

"People travel."

"I was speaking at the Vale Foundation scholarship dinner in front of eight hundred people."

Dana looked at him.

Adrian's expression did not change.

"Electronic signatures exist."

Charlotte wanted to scream.

Instead, she forced herself to breathe slowly.

That was what they wanted.

Every angry reaction would become evidence for their story.

Every accusation would be called paranoia.

Every attempt to defend herself would be framed as instability.

Her mother had warned her.

Do not let grief make you trust the people who stand closest to the coffin.

Charlotte looked at Victoria.

"Who is the doctor?"

"I don't know."

"You quoted my supposed condition thirty seconds ago."

Victoria smiled thinly.

"Adrian explained it to me."

"Of course he did."

Dana took the petition back.

"I'm not determining anyone's competency in a hotel lobby."

Charlotte felt a small rush of gratitude.

"Thank you."

"But I am determining whether a crime occurred here tonight."

Dana looked at Victoria.

"You say she grabbed you first."

"Yes."

"Where?"

Victoria pointed to her wrist.

"Here."

Dana examined the mark.

"And then you pushed her?"

Victoria hesitated.

"I defended myself."

"So you did push her."

Adrian stepped in.

"Officer, this questioning is becoming adversarial."

Dana turned her head.

"That's usually what happens when stories don't match."

Charlotte almost smiled.

A knock came at the salon door.

Lena entered.

She looked frightened but determined.

Behind her stood a bellman Charlotte did not recognize.

He held a phone.

"I'm sorry," Lena said.

"But he saw everything."

The bellman's name tag read NOAH.

Victoria's face changed.

Noah looked at Dana.

"I wasn't recording the fight."

"I was filming the lobby for my sister because she wants to apply here."

He unlocked his phone.

"But I think I caught it in the background."

Everyone in the room stared at the screen.

Noah played the video.

The image showed the orchids in the foreground.

Behind them, Victoria could clearly be seen stepping toward Charlotte.

Charlotte's hands were down.

Victoria placed both palms against Charlotte's shoulders.

Then she shoved.

There was no ambiguity.

No first attack.

No self-defense.

Charlotte struck the floor.

Dana slowly looked at Victoria.

Victoria's face had gone white.

Then Noah's video continued.

Adrian crossed the lobby seconds later.

The phone's microphone captured something the security cameras had not.

Victoria leaned toward Adrian before he reached Charlotte.

Her voice was faint but clear.

"You said she was never coming back."

No one moved.

Charlotte felt every hair on her arms rise.

Adrian stared at Noah's phone.

Victoria turned toward him in panic.

May you like

And Charlotte realized the conspiracy had just spoken for itself.
