Chapter 12 - The Witness in Room 1708.

Elias's voice also restored a piece of Charlotte's past that Richard's people had tried to erase.

For weeks she had wondered whether the trustee abandoned her because he believed she was unprepared to lead Solmere.

That possibility had hurt more than she admitted.

Elias had known her since birth.

If even he had disappeared, perhaps the board's quiet doubts about her were justified.

Hearing the fear in his voice changed that story instantly.

He had not abandoned her.

He had been threatened into hiding.

Charlotte felt ashamed of how readily isolation had made her interpret silence as rejection.

That was another part of Richard's strategy.

Cut people apart and they begin inventing explanations for one another's absence.

Suspicion finishes the work intimidation started.

Charlotte looked around the boardroom at people who had spent months separated by manipulated information and understood that bringing witnesses together was becoming as important as collecting documents.

Richard Crowe did not panic after the phone hit the floor.

He did something more frightening.

He became calm again.

He sat down, adjusted his cuff, and looked around the boardroom as if the previous thirty seconds had been a temporary interruption.

"This meeting is adjourned."

Gavin Sloan stared at him.

"Richard, you can't simply—"

"I said adjourned."

Several directors immediately stood.

Others remained seated.

Charlotte watched loyalty fracture along invisible lines.

Some directors looked scared of Richard.

Some looked scared of the evidence.

A few looked scared of being caught on camera choosing the wrong side.

Noah picked up his phone.

The glass was cracked, but the stream was still active.

Comments were moving too quickly to read.

One message appeared repeatedly.

CALL THE POLICE.

Marcus leaned toward Charlotte.

"Dana is already downstairs."

Charlotte nodded.

"Tell her to come up."

Marcus started toward the door.

Richard's voice stopped him.

"Mr. Reed."

Marcus turned.

"You will not leave this room with stolen company documents."

Charlotte laughed.

"Stolen from my mother's private archive?"

Richard looked at her.

"Your mother's archive became company property upon her death."

"You really want to argue chain of custody right now?"

Gavin rubbed his forehead.

"Nobody should touch anything else."

"For once," Charlotte said, "I agree with counsel."

Victoria stood near the windows, breathing too quickly.

Her earlier fury had collapsed into fear.

Charlotte walked toward her.

Victoria backed away one step.

"Don't come near me."

Charlotte stopped.

"You said Mercer was handled."

Victoria shook her head.

"I repeated what Richard told me."

"What did you think it meant?"

"I don't know."

Charlotte held her gaze.

"Lie better."

Victoria's eyes filled with anger.

"You think you're so superior because your name is on a trust."

"No."

Charlotte's voice stayed quiet.

"I think I'm standing here because my mother is dead and everyone she trusted is lying."

Victoria looked away.

That reaction was different.

Guilt.

Not about the money.

Something else.

Charlotte moved closer.

"Where is Elias Mercer?"

Victoria's jaw clenched.

"I don't know."

"What did Richard tell you?"

Silence.

"Victoria."

The socialite's eyes moved toward Richard.

He was watching them.

Charlotte followed her gaze.

"You're afraid of him."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"You should be too."

"I was."

Charlotte looked back at her.

"I'm getting over it."

The boardroom doors opened.

Dana Keller entered with Ortega and two additional officers.

Behind them came Priya and Samuel from hotel security.

Dana looked at the room.

"I received approximately forty-seven calls about a live video from this floor."

Noah raised his broken phone.

"That would be me."

Dana looked at Richard.

"Mr. Crowe, I'd like everyone to remain available while we sort this out."

Richard stood.

"Officer, this is a corporate dispute."

Dana's expression did not change.

"A corporate dispute where someone just discussed a dead woman's crash on a live recording."

Richard looked at Victoria.

Victoria flinched.

"Words taken out of context."

Dana nodded.

"Then context will be useful."

Richard's attorneys began speaking at once.

Dana held up one hand.

"One lawyer at a time."

Charlotte almost smiled.

Ortega collected the documents from Gavin and photographed them where they lay.

Marcus gave Dana the corrupted flash drive and explained the attempted purge.

Ruth handed over copies of the aircraft maintenance report.

For the first time all night, the evidence was leaving Solmere under the control of people Adrian could not simply fire.

Then Charlotte's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

She almost ignored it.

Ruth saw the area code.

"Wait."

Charlotte looked at her.

"What?"

"That's Virginia."

"So?"

"Elias has a house in Virginia."

Charlotte's pulse jumped.

She answered.

"Hello?"

No one spoke.

She heard breathing.

Then an older man's voice.

"Charlotte?"

Her knees nearly weakened.

She knew the voice.

"Elias?"

Everyone near her turned.

Richard went completely still.

The voice on the phone trembled.

"Thank God."

Charlotte gripped the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Not where they think."

"Are you safe?"

A pause.

"For the moment."

Charlotte looked at Richard.

He was staring at her.

"Why did you disappear?"

Elias exhaled.

"Because someone broke into my office and took the certified trust copy."

"They left a photograph of my granddaughter on my desk."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

"Richard?"

"I couldn't prove it."

"Eleanor suspected him."

"She called me the night before she died."

Charlotte could barely breathe.

"What did she say?"

"She said she had enough evidence to remove him from the board."

Elias's voice broke.

"She said she had finally discovered what happened to the missing money."

Charlotte looked around the boardroom.

Everyone was listening now.

She placed the call on speaker.

"Elias, you're on speaker with police present."

There was a long silence.

Then he said, "Good."

Richard's face darkened.

Dana stepped closer to the phone.

"Mr. Mercer, I'm Sergeant Dana Keller."

"Are you willing to provide a formal statement?"

"Yes."

Richard's attorney whispered urgently to him.

Charlotte ignored them.

"Elias, did my mother transfer control of Solmere to Richard Crowe?"

"Absolutely not."

The answer was immediate.

Several board members looked at Richard.

Charlotte felt tears threaten her eyes.

She forced them back.

"Did I authorize any transfer?"

"No."

"Does the original Vale Family Trust still name me as controlling beneficiary?"

"Yes."

Richard stood.

"This telephone performance proves nothing."

Elias heard him.

His voice changed.

"Hello, Richard."

Richard said nothing.

"I wondered whether I would ever hear your voice again outside a threat."

The room froze.

Dana looked sharply at Richard.

He laughed softly.

"Careful, Elias."

Elias answered.

"That's exactly what you told me after Eleanor's funeral."

Richard's expression became unreadable.

Charlotte felt the years of friendship between the two men turning poisonous in the open.

"Where are you?" Richard asked.

Dana interrupted.

"Mr. Mercer, do not answer that question."

Elias gave a tired laugh.

"I wasn't planning to."

Charlotte pressed the phone closer.

"How do we validate the original trust?"

"I can certify it in person."

"Can you come here?"

Elias hesitated.

"Not tonight."

Charlotte's heart sank.

Then he continued.

"But I can give you something better for tonight."

"Go to Room 1708."

Charlotte frowned.

"Why?"

"Your mother left a witness there."

Richard's head snapped toward Adrian.

Adrian looked confused.

Elias continued.

"A man named Thomas Bellamy."

"He was Solmere's fleet systems engineer."

Marcus looked at the vehicle file.

Charlotte's pulse accelerated.

"Is he still there?"

"He checked in under another name two hours ago."

"He has been waiting for you."

Richard's calm finally broke.

"There is no guest in 1708."

Everyone turned toward him.

Charlotte stared.

Dana narrowed her eyes.

"How would you know?"

Richard realized what he had said.

Too late.

Charlotte picked up the brass key from around her neck.

"Let's go meet the man you're pretending isn't upstairs."

Room 1708 was located in the older tower, far from the penthouse elevators.

Dana insisted Charlotte remain with police.

Richard and the others were ordered to stay in the boardroom while officers secured the documents.

Victoria immediately asked for a lawyer.

Adrian stopped speaking altogether.

Charlotte, Marcus, Ruth, Dana, and Ortega took the service elevator down three floors and crossed a quiet guest corridor.

Noah remained behind to preserve the live stream recording.

At 1708, Dana knocked.

No response.

She knocked again.

"Police."

Something scraped inside.

The door opened slowly.

A thin man in his sixties stood there with white hair, thick glasses, and fear carved into every line of his face.

He looked at Charlotte.

Then at Ruth.

"You came."

Charlotte stepped inside.

"Thomas Bellamy?"

He nodded.

"Your mother saved my life once."

He closed the door.

"I couldn't save hers."

Charlotte's throat tightened.

Thomas opened a laptop on the desk.

"But I saved this."

A video file appeared.

The timestamp was the night before Eleanor Vale's fatal crash.

The camera angle showed the Solmere executive garage.

Eleanor's black sedan sat beneath bright service lights.

A man approached the vehicle.

Charlotte leaned toward the screen.

The man's face came into view.

Adrian Kessler.

He opened the hood.

Then another figure entered the frame.

Richard Crowe.

May you like

Charlotte stopped breathing.
