Chapter 18 - The Name on the Ledger.

Marco looked nothing like a fugitive.
His suit was dry.
His hair was neat.
He carried himself like a man arriving early to a board meeting.
Isabella held Leo against her chest.
Hunter moved in front of them.
Marco smiled at her.
“You have caused an extraordinary amount of trouble for someone hired to polish furniture.”
Hunter’s fear sharpened into anger.
“You chose the wrong maid.”
Marco’s smile widened.
“I did not choose you.”
Hunter froze.
“Vincent did.”
“He thought your loss would make you easy to control.”
Marco’s eyes moved toward Leo.
“I told him grief makes people unpredictable.”
Adrian emerged behind them.
Hunter realized they were trapped.
Marco held out his hand.
“The ledger.”
“We don’t have it,” Isabella said.
Marco’s expression changed when he looked at his mother.
“You signed the first transfer.”
“You made this possible.”
“I made a mistake.”
“No.”
Marco’s voice became sharp.
“You chose the family.”
“Then you got scared when the family required a price.”
Isabella’s face crumpled.
Hunter saw how men like Marco survived.
They turned everyone’s guilt into permission for their own cruelty.
Footsteps sounded from the tunnel behind Marco.
Lorenzo appeared with Gabriel and two guards.
Marco immediately grabbed Isabella and pulled her toward him.
Hunter reached for Leo.
Isabella pushed the baby into Hunter’s arms before Marco could stop her.
“Take him.”
Lorenzo raised one hand.
“Marco.”
“No closer.”
Rainwater dripped through cracks in the stone ceiling.
The tunnel shook with thunder.
Marco looked at his brother.
“You would destroy everything our father built for a woman who wanted to run away from it.”
Lorenzo’s voice was quiet.
“Sophia wanted Leo to grow up without needing armed men outside his bedroom.”
“She was right.”
Marco laughed.
“You think you can become someone else because a baby drank a bottle?”
“No.”
Lorenzo looked at Hunter and Leo.
“I think I can decide what happens next.”
Gabriel lifted the ledger.
“We copied it.”
Marco’s face changed.
“Every page,” Gabriel continued.
“Every transfer.”
“Every shell company.”
“And the payment tied to Sophia’s car.”
Marco’s grip on Isabella loosened.
“There is no payment with my name.”
Gabriel opened the book.
“You are right.”
He turned it around.
“The name is M. Rossi.”
Marco smiled.
“That proves nothing.”
Isabella began to cry.
“It proves enough.”
Everyone looked at her.
She reached slowly into her coat and pulled out a folded document.
“I found this in your father’s old safe.”
Marco’s confidence vanished.
The paper was a beneficiary amendment signed twelve years earlier.
M. Rossi did not refer to Marco.
Gabriel unfolded the amendment beside the ledger.
The dates matched the earliest transfers by less than forty-eight hours.
Matteo had created a dormant financial structure that could be activated if Lorenzo threatened what the document called continuity of family control.
Marco had not invented the machinery.
He had inherited it.
That did not lessen what he had done.
It made the betrayal older than anyone in the tunnel had wanted to believe.
Lorenzo looked at Isabella.
She could not meet his eyes.
The family myth of a strong father protecting his sons was collapsing into something uglier.
It referred to Matteo Rossi.
Lorenzo’s father.
Hunter stared at the brothers.
Lorenzo whispered, “Dad?”
May you like
Isabella nodded through tears.
“The plan started before he died.”
