Chapter 14 - The Traitor's Mercy.

Dr. Halloran’s brother was named Andrew.

He had attended medical school but never completed residency after losing his license in a fraud investigation.

According to public records, Andrew Halloran died in a boating accident off Connecticut seven years earlier.

According to the hospital camera, he was alive eight months ago.

Lorenzo ordered every file connected to Andrew reopened.

By evening, Gabriel found something worse.

Vincent Caruso had paid for Andrew’s funeral.

There had been no body.

Hunter stood by the nursery window while Leo slept.

Below, black cars moved through the estate gates as Lorenzo’s men searched New York for Vincent, Marco, Adrian, and Andrew.

Four missing men.

Four separate threads.

One knot.

Lorenzo entered carrying an old leather ledger.

“My father gave this to Vincent thirty years ago.”

Hunter looked at it.

“Why do you have it?”

“Because Vincent left it in his office.”

“You found him?”

“No.”

Lorenzo opened the book.

A photograph slipped out.

Sophia stood beside Vincent at a family Christmas party.

On the back she had written a date and one sentence.

ASK HIM ABOUT THE FOUNDATION.

Lorenzo sat heavily in the chair.

“I missed all of it.”

Hunter looked at him.

“You were not supposed to see it.”

“My wife did.”

“And she was killed.”

The words hurt, but Hunter refused to soften them into something less true.

Lorenzo stared at Leo.

“I thought revenge meant I had answered her death.”

“You answered the people they pointed you toward.”

He looked at her.

Hunter continued.

“That is not the same thing.”

A guard appeared in the doorway.

“Mr. Rossi, we found Vincent.”

Lorenzo stood.

Vincent Caruso was brought into the library an hour later.

He was seventy-one, silver-haired, perfectly dressed, and bleeding from a cut above one eyebrow.

He looked at Lorenzo with the weary sadness of an uncle disappointed in a child.

“You should have stayed with your son,” Vincent said.

Lorenzo’s face became stone.

“You arranged Sophia’s death.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“No.”

“You hid Andrew Halloran.”

“Yes.”

“You paid Tommy Vance.”

“Yes.”

Hunter stepped into the room.

Vincent saw her and looked genuinely sorry.

“That was not supposed to happen to your daughter.”

Hunter’s breath stopped.

Lorenzo moved before anyone else.

Gabriel caught his arm.

Hunter raised her voice.

“No.”

Lorenzo turned toward her.

Hunter stared at Vincent.

“Tell me what was supposed to happen.”

Vincent looked down.

“You were selected because you were healthy, pregnant, alone, and financially vulnerable.”

Hunter felt nauseated.

“For what?”

“To enter this house after the birth.”

“Why?”

Vincent’s eyes moved toward Lorenzo.

“Because someone knew Leo would need a woman he could bond with after Sophia was gone.”

Silence filled the library.

Lorenzo whispered, “After Sophia was gone?”

Vincent looked toward the closed door.

Then he said the words that broke whatever remained of Lorenzo’s trust.

Vincent rubbed both hands over his face.

He said Andrew Halloran had been useful because he understood hospital systems, medical records, and how to make a false identity survive routine checks.

Daniel Price handled surveillance.

Tommy was supposed to remain only an information source.

Vincent insisted he had tried to stop the plan after Sophia became pregnant, but by then Marco had collected enough leverage to destroy everyone who helped him.

Hunter did not mistake regret for innocence.

“You had chances to walk away,” she said.

Vincent looked at her.

“Yes.”

“And every time, you chose yourself.”

He lowered his eyes.

Then he said the words that broke whatever remained of Lorenzo’s trust.

“Marco planned for her death before the bomb was ever built.”
