Chapter 12 - The Name Mia Finally Said.

Victor Romano stopped pretending to be in control.

The change was subtle.

His shoulders dropped half an inch.

His breathing shortened.

His eyes moved from the red cup to Matteo's sealed water bottle and then toward the open chapel door.

Lorenzo recognized the look.

A man calculating whether the trap around him belonged to someone else.

"Who made the second formula?" Lorenzo asked.

Victor remained silent.

Marco stepped forward.

"Answer him."

Victor laughed without humor.

"You still think I'm the top of this?"

Salvatore appeared behind Matteo.

He had ignored every instruction to stay at the house.

"No," he said.

His eyes were fixed on his brother.

"I think you wanted everyone to believe you were."

Victor's face hardened.

"You always did underestimate me."

"And you always did overestimate how unique you were."

The brothers stared at each other across the old chapel.

Serena looked exhausted by both of them.

"Who made it?"

Victor looked at her.

"Hart."

"For whom?"

"He said it was insurance."

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

"Insurance against what?"

"Against me."

The answer changed the room.

Victor continued before anyone interrupted.

"Hart decided I knew too much."

Salvatore laughed bitterly.

"You hired him."

"I hired a doctor who liked money."

"That's not the same as loyalty."

"I know that now."

Marco held up Matteo's water bottle.

"You think Hart prepared this?"

"Or Celeste."

Celeste looked furious.

"I never touched it."

Victor stared at her.

"You've lied for months."

"For you."

"That does not improve the lie."

Lorenzo raised one hand.

"Enough."

The chapel became quiet.

"Hart cleared his clinic this morning."

He looked at Victor.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"Where did he go?"

Victor hesitated.

Lorenzo moved one step closer.

"If you lie now, the next drink somebody leaves unattended may be yours."

Victor looked at the red cup again.

"He has a house in Connecticut."

"Address."

Victor gave it.

Marco passed the information to his team.

Then Mia walked into the center aisle.

Elena immediately reached for her.

"Sweetheart, stay with me."

Mia ignored the instruction.

She stared at Victor.

Then at Salvatore.

Then at Serena.

Finally, she looked at Elena.

Her small hand began to shake.

Elena crouched.

"It's okay."

Mia's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

She closed it again.

Lorenzo waited.

Nobody else spoke.

Mia pointed at Victor.

Then she shook her head.

She pointed at Salvatore.

Again, she shook her head.

She pointed toward the chapel doors.

Her lips moved.

A whisper came out.

"Doctor."

Elena's eyes filled instantly.

Mia had spoken only a handful of words since the party.

Every one of them had arrived when silence became more dangerous than fear.

"Doctor Hart?" Lorenzo asked gently.

Mia nodded.

Then she said another word.

"Tomas."

Elena froze.

"What about Daddy?"

Mia's face crumpled, but she did not cry loudly.

She looked toward Victor.

Then toward Salvatore.

Then she whispered.

"Doctor car."

Elena gripped her shoulders.

"You saw a doctor with Daddy?"

Mia nodded.

Everyone went still.

Elena stared at Lorenzo.

"She was two."

"Children remember images."

"She never said anything."

"She couldn't."

Mia reached for Elena's phone.

Elena handed it over.

The girl opened the camera roll with familiar fingers and scrolled through old photographs.

She stopped at a family picture of Tomas holding her as a toddler.

Then she used her finger to zoom in on the background.

A man stood beside a black sedan.

The image was blurred.

But the shape of the face was recognizable.

Nathan Hart.

Elena covered her mouth.

"That was the last family picnic before Tomas disappeared."

Lorenzo looked at Victor.

"You said Hart came into this four months ago."

Victor's face went pale.

"That's when I hired him."

"No."

Lorenzo's voice became very quiet.

"That's when you think you hired him."

Salvatore stared at the photograph.

"Hart knew Tomas years ago."

Victor shook his head.

"Impossible."

"Why?"

"Because Hart was recommended to me by..."

He stopped.

Lorenzo saw the realization arrive.

"By whom?"

Victor looked at Celeste.

She shook her head.

"Not me."

Victor looked at Salvatore.

"Your attorney."

Serena frowned.

"Which attorney?"

Salvatore's face drained of color.

"Benjamin Cole."

The name meant something to Lorenzo.

Benjamin Cole had drafted the original partnership documents between Carlo Duca and Salvatore Romano eleven years earlier.

He had also notarized the new engagement agreement.

Section nine.

The altered page.

Lorenzo's voice went flat.

"Where is Cole now?"

Salvatore looked at his watch.

"He was supposed to be at my office this afternoon."

Marco called immediately.

No answer.

He called Cole's assistant.

This time someone answered.

Marco listened.

His face changed.

"Cole left for the airport an hour ago."

"Where is he flying?" Lorenzo asked.

Marco looked at him.

"Zurich."

Victor laughed once in disbelief.

"Of course."

Serena turned toward him.

"What?"

Victor looked at Lorenzo.

"The second ledger isn't a book."

"What is it?"

"An account archive."

He pointed at Carlo's black envelope.

"The page gives access instructions."

Lorenzo picked up the letter Victor had placed on the altar.

He read the final line again.

A phrase he had ignored earlier now stood out.

THE SECOND LEDGER RESTS WHERE NUMBERS SLEEP BEYOND BORDERS.

Salvatore whispered.

"Switzerland."

Victor nodded.

"Cole has been controlling it for years."

Lorenzo looked toward the chapel doors.

The conspiracy had shifted again.

Victor had manipulated Hart.

Hart had manipulated Serena.

Celeste had been coerced.

But someone had connected all of them to a structure built more than a decade earlier.

Benjamin Cole.

The lawyer who had sat quietly beside both families through funerals, agreements, business disputes, and now an engagement.

The man everyone trusted because he never appeared to want power.

Lorenzo finally understood why.

May you like

Cole did not need the chair.

He had spent years writing the rules that decided who sat in it.
