Chapter 2: The Unexpected Return

Chapter 2: The Unexpected Return
Victoria froze.
The champagne flute slipped slightly in her hand as she turned toward the source of the sound.
A weathered military duffel bag rested in the middle of the courtyard, coated in dust from a long journey. Beside it stood a tall woman dressed in civilian clothing, her posture unmistakably disciplined despite the plain jeans and dark jacket she wore.
Captain Valerie Sterling.
Her hair was pulled into a tight ponytail, and a faint scar crossed her left eyebrow—a reminder of years spent serving overseas. Her expression remained calm, but her eyes immediately scanned the estate with the precision of someone trained to recognize danger.
Victoria's smile vanished.
"Valerie..." she said, forcing a laugh. "What a surprise. We weren't expecting you until next month."
"I wasn't expected," Valerie replied evenly. "That's why I came home without telling anyone."
Something about Victoria's voice felt rehearsed.
Something about the estate felt wrong.
The longtime gardeners were gone.
The familiar security guards had disappeared.
Even the dogs that normally greeted visitors were nowhere to be seen.
Years in military intelligence had taught Valerie one simple lesson.
When everything looks perfect...
Someone worked very hard to make it look that way.
"Where's my mother?" Valerie asked.
Victoria raised her champagne glass.
"Still enjoying that wellness retreat in the mountains. She asked not to be disturbed."
Valerie didn't answer.
Instead, her eyes settled on faint scratches across the stone walkway.
Fresh scratches.
As if something heavy had recently been dragged toward the rear gardens.
She quietly memorized the trail.
Behind Victoria, hidden by thick lavender bushes, Beatrice heard her daughter's voice.
Tears streamed down her face.
She tried to scream.
Only a weak rasp escaped her cracked lips.
No one heard.
Or so Victoria believed.
As Valerie picked up her duffel bag, she noticed something else.
A tiny military-issued satellite tracker blinked inside an open pocket.
She smiled almost imperceptibly.
She hadn't come home alone.
Without telling Victoria, she had activated an emergency location beacon the moment she entered the estate.
Hundreds of miles away, the signal appeared on a secure military operations screen.
Someone immediately recognized the Sterling family name.

And someone began making calls.
Victoria had no idea the clock had already started ticking.
