Chapter 2: The Hair That Changed the Room

Chapter 2: The Hair That Changed the Room

For a long moment...

No one applauded.

No one spoke.

The only sound inside the grand ballroom was the little girl's quiet sobbing as she clung to Hannah with every ounce of strength she had.

The silver shears still rested on the polished floor.

A thick lock of Hannah's beautiful light-brown hair remained in the little girl's trembling hands.

The guests who had gasped only moments earlier slowly lowered their phones.

Some wiped away tears.

Others looked down, ashamed.

The dance committee president finally stepped forward.

"I... I don't understand."

The little girl carefully pulled away from Hannah and looked around the silent ballroom.

"My name is Emma."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I have leukemia."

The room froze.

"My chemotherapy took all my hair."

She nervously touched her smooth scalp.

"I wanted to come to the Father-Daughter Charity Dance..."

"...but I didn't want everyone staring at me."

Emma lowered her eyes.

"I told my mom I wasn't brave enough."

Hannah smiled softly through tears.

"We met at the children's hospital."

Flashbacks flooded across the guests' minds as Hannah continued.

"Every Friday after school..."

"...I'd volunteer in the pediatric oncology ward."

"Emma always asked if I would braid her hair one day."

A painful silence settled over the ballroom.

"But she never had enough hair to braid."

Hannah looked at the ponytail now resting in Emma's hands.

"So I promised..."

"...if she couldn't have hers back..."

"...I'd give her mine."

Across the room, Hannah's mother slowly covered her mouth.

The panic in her face disappeared.

She finally understood.

She wasn't watching her daughter destroy something beautiful.

She was watching her daughter become something beautiful.

Quietly...

She began to cry.

May you like

Not from heartbreak.

But from pride.
