Chapter 14: The Mother Who Came Back

Chapter 14: The Mother Who Came Back

Alexander could not move.

The phone remained pressed against his ear, but his mind had stopped processing everything around him.

The voice.

The name.

The impossible reality.

"Alexander?"

Again.

The same voice.

Older.

Softer.

But unmistakable.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

"No."

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Across the room, Eleanor watched him carefully.

"Who is it?"

Alexander looked at her.

His face had gone completely pale.

"It's my mother."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room understood the meaning of those words.

Alexander's mother was supposed to be dead.

Twenty years earlier, Alexander Reed had been told his mother died from an illness.

He had been young.

Too young to question the details.

There was no funeral he remembered.

No final goodbye.

Only a closed casket and Thomas telling him that some things in life were painful but unavoidable.

For years, Alexander carried the grief.

Then he carried anger.

Then eventually, he carried nothing.

Because after enough time, even pain becomes something people learn to store away.

But now...

The impossible had returned.

"Where are you?" Alexander asked.

His voice was barely steady.

The woman on the phone hesitated.

"I don't have much time."

His heart sank.

"Who told you to call me?"

"No one."

A pause.

"I found out the truth."

Alexander closed his eyes.

"What truth?"

The answer came quietly.

"That Thomas didn't abandon us."

Eleanor looked at Alexander.

He turned away.

The wound was too old.

Too deep.

"Then why did you disappear?"

Silence.

When she finally answered, her voice was broken.

"Because Marcus made sure I couldn't come back."

The call ended before Alexander could ask more.

He stared at the phone.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

Anger.

Confusion.

Relief.

Betrayal.

Eleanor approached slowly.

"Alexander."

He looked at her.

"She was alive."

"I know."

"Thomas knew."

The realization hurt more than the surprise.

"Thomas knew my mother was alive."

Eleanor didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

And that uncertainty frightened her.

An hour later, they returned to Thomas's study.

Every secret had led back to Marcus.

But now there was another question.

Why had Marcus hidden Alexander's mother?

Detective Brooks joined them with new information.

"Her name is Sarah Reed."

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

"We found records."

The detective opened a folder.

"She changed her name after leaving Napa."

"Why?"

"Because someone threatened her."

Alexander looked at Eleanor.

"Marcus."

Detective Brooks nodded.

"Apparently."

She placed another document down.

"This was filed twenty years ago."

Eleanor read it.

A missing person report.

Sarah Reed.

Filed by:

Thomas Vale.

Her hands froze.

"He reported her missing."

Alexander looked shocked.

"He was looking for her?"

"Yes."

Detective Brooks continued.

"According to this, Thomas believed she was taken against her will."

The truth began forming.

Sarah didn't leave.

She was forced away.

Thomas didn't abandon Alexander.

He tried to find her.

And Marcus had hidden everything.

But why?

The answer came from Helena.

When she arrived at the estate later that day, she looked exhausted.

"You found Sarah."

Eleanor stared at her.

"You knew?"

Helena nodded.

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I didn't know if she was alive."

Alexander stepped forward.

"How much do you know?"

Helena looked at him sadly.

"More than I should."

"Tell me."

She took a deep breath.

"Your mother discovered Marcus was stealing from the company."

Alexander froze.

"She knew?"

"Yes."

"Thomas knew?"

"Yes."

Helena looked at Eleanor.

"That was the real reason Marcus wanted her gone."

The room went quiet.

Marcus hadn't been trying to protect the company.

He had been protecting himself.

Sarah found the fraud.

Thomas discovered the truth.

Helena helped investigate.

And everyone who knew became a threat.

Including Alexander.

Meanwhile, Marcus sat in a private airport lounge.

He watched the news on his phone.

The headlines were spreading.

Vale Family Investigation Expands After New Evidence Emerges

He smiled slightly.

Chaos.

That was what he understood.

Not money.

Not power.

Chaos.

Because people revealed their true selves when everything collapsed.

His phone rang.

Julian.

Marcus answered.

"What do you want?"

Julian's voice was different.

"You knew."

Marcus looked out the window.

"About what?"

"My mother."

A pause.

"Ah."

Julian's voice hardened.

"You knew Alexander's mother was alive."

"Yes."

"And you lied to everyone."

"I protected the family."

"No."

Julian's voice shook.

"You destroyed it."

Marcus smiled.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You sound exactly like your father."

The insult was intentional.

But this time, Julian didn't react.

Instead, he asked:

"Did you kill him?"

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Marcus answered.

"No."

Julian breathed out.

Relief.

But it disappeared when Marcus continued.

"I didn't need to."

Julian sat frozen.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus looked at the airport runway.

"Your father made choices."

"What choices?"

"Choices that put everyone at risk."

"Stop talking in riddles."

Marcus sighed.

"Thomas was going to expose me."

"So?"

"So I gave him a reason to hesitate."

Julian's voice lowered.

"What reason?"

Marcus smiled.

"You."

Julian felt sick.

"What did you do?"

"I showed him what his son was capable of."

The words cut deeply.

"You used me."

"No."

Marcus corrected him.

"You volunteered."

Julian ended the call.

For the first time, he didn't feel anger.

He felt shame.

That evening, Sarah Reed finally arrived at the Vale estate.

When Alexander saw her step out of the car, he stopped breathing.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of believing she was gone.

She looked older.

Fragile.

But alive.

Neither of them moved.

Then Sarah whispered:

"I'm sorry."

Alexander's eyes filled.

"Why?"

She cried silently.

"Because I let you believe I abandoned you."

A pause.

"I should have fought harder."

Alexander shook his head.

"You were my mother."

"I was."

The pain in her voice was unbearable.

"But I was also afraid."

Eleanor watched from a distance.

She saw something she had not seen in years.

Healing.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But the beginning of it.

Then Sarah noticed Eleanor.

Her expression changed.

"There is something you need to know."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"What?"

Sarah looked toward the vineyard.

"The night Thomas died..."

Everyone became still.

"I was there."

Alexander looked shocked.

"You saw it?"

Sarah nodded.

"And I know who was with him."

Eleanor's heart began racing.

"Who?"

Sarah looked directly at her.

"The person Marcus was protecting."

A pause.

"The person who actually caused the accident."

Nobody moved.

Then Sarah said a name.

May you like

A name that shattered everything they thought they knew.

"Julian Vale."
