Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Glass

Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Glass

The second day after the rescue began with rain.

Gray clouds hung low over Chicago, washing the city in a cold drizzle that matched the mood inside Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Lucy had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same image.

Heavy black firefighter boots.

Walking right past her.

Toward Valerie.

She jerked awake again, her breathing uneven.

A nurse immediately hurried to her bedside.

"Easy, Lucy. You're safe."

Lucy slowly nodded, pressing one trembling hand against her stomach.

"Is... she okay?"

The nurse smiled as she adjusted the fetal monitor.

"Your little girl has a strong heartbeat this morning."

A rhythmic sound filled the room.

Thump...

Thump...

Thump...

One hundred twenty-eight beats per minute.

For the first time since entering the hospital, Lucy allowed herself to cry.

Not from fear.

From relief.

"My baby..."

The nurse squeezed her shoulder gently.

"She's a fighter."

Lucy whispered through tears,

"She gets that from her mother."

Outside the ICU, Alex hadn't changed clothes since the rescue.

His uniform was wrinkled.

Dark circles shadowed his eyes.

A paper cup of cold coffee sat untouched beside him.

Captain Brooks arrived carrying a folder.

"You look terrible."

"I feel worse."

Brooks sat beside him.

"The investigation officially started this morning."

Alex nodded.

"I expected that."

"The investigators have interviewed Mark."

Alex looked up.

"What did he say?"

"The truth."

Brooks handed him the folder.

Inside was a temporary administrative order.

Lieutenant Alex Davis is hereby placed on administrative leave pending completion of an Internal Affairs investigation.

Alex stared at the page.

"So that's it."

"For now."

"My badge?"

"You'll keep it until the investigation concludes."

"My command?"

"Transferred temporarily."

"My crew?"

Brooks hesitated.

"They've already been reassigned."

Alex leaned back against the wall.

Fifteen years.

Hundreds of rescues.

Dozens of commendations.

One decision...

And everything was slipping away.

Across town, Detective James Ortega continued interviewing witnesses.

His next stop was the department store.

The building manager escorted him into the security office.

"We've saved every camera angle," the manager explained.

Ortega nodded.

"I'd like footage from the elevator lobby."

The manager loaded another recording.

Unlike the rescue videos, this one showed what happened before the elevator became trapped.

Eight people entered.

The elderly man.

The young mother and her son.

Two college students.

The delivery driver.

Lucy.

Valerie.

Then...

Alex.

The detective frowned.

He paused the footage.

Alex wasn't supposed to be there.

He wasn't on duty.

He wasn't responding to an emergency.

He entered the elevator carrying a cup of coffee.

Valerie stood beside him.

They were talking.

Laughing.

Lucy stood several feet away near the back wall.

Watching them.

The detective rewound the video.

Again.

Then once more.

There was no doubt.

Alex and Valerie had arrived together.

He immediately made a copy of the footage.

At Mercy Hospital, Valerie packed her overnight bag.

A nurse entered carrying discharge papers.

"You're free to go."

"Thank you."

As Valerie signed the paperwork, her phone rang.

The caller ID made her freeze.

Detective Ortega

She let it ring.

Voicemail answered.

Seconds later...

Another call.

She declined it again.

Then a text message appeared.

Please contact me today regarding the elevator incident.

Valerie slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time...

She wasn't worried about Alex.

She was worried about herself.

Back at Northwestern Memorial, Dr. Emily Carter reviewed Lucy's latest test results.

Everything looked encouraging.

Blood pressure was improving.

Oxygen levels had normalized.

The baby's heartbeat remained stable.

Physically...

Lucy was recovering.

Emotionally...

She wasn't.

Dr. Carter entered the room carrying a clipboard.

"Good morning."

Lucy offered a weak smile.

"I don't feel very good."

"I wouldn't expect you to."

The doctor pulled up a chair.

"I need to ask you a few questions."

Lucy nodded.

"Were you and your husband together before the elevator became trapped?"

Lucy stared out the window.

"No."

"What do you mean?"

"I was shopping for baby clothes."

She swallowed.

"I didn't know he was in the building."

"When did you see him?"

"When the elevator doors opened."

Dr. Carter frowned.

"You didn't know he was inside the elevator with you?"

Lucy slowly shook her head.

"I didn't even realize he was there until I heard Valerie call his name."

The doctor wrote something on her chart.

"Who is Valerie?"

Lucy closed her eyes.

"My husband's ex-girlfriend."

Silence filled the room.

Dr. Carter looked up.

"She was the woman he rescued first?"

"Yes."

Another note appeared on the chart.

Then Lucy whispered something so softly the doctor almost missed it.

"I think..."

"I finally understand."

"Understand what?"

Lucy smiled sadly.

"I was never the first choice."

That afternoon, the Internal Affairs investigators returned to Fire Department Headquarters.

Captain Brooks waited for them.

"What did you find?"

Detective Ortega placed a flash drive on the table.

"New security footage."

Brooks inserted it into the conference room computer.

Seconds later, the video began.

Everyone watched in silence.

Alex and Valerie entered the elevator together.

Laughing.

Standing close enough that their shoulders brushed.

Lucy entered several seconds later.

Alone.

No one in the room spoke.

When the footage ended, Deputy Chief Harris removed his glasses.

"So..."

"He knew she was there before the elevator stopped."

Ortega nodded.

"And according to witnesses..."

"They appeared very comfortable together."

Brooks exhaled slowly.

"This just became much bigger than a rescue investigation."

That evening, Alex finally received permission to leave the waiting area long enough to shower and change clothes.

As he walked through the hospital lobby, he noticed several people staring at him.

Two nurses whispered.

A visitor looked down at his phone before glancing back at Alex.

He didn't need to ask why.

His own face filled the television mounted above the reception desk.

The news anchor spoke calmly.

"Questions continue to mount after newly obtained surveillance footage appears to show Lieutenant Alex Davis arriving at the elevator alongside Valerie Reynolds before the seven-hour entrapment."

The screen switched to the security video.

Alex froze.

He watched himself laughing with Valerie.

He watched Lucy quietly step into the elevator behind them.

He had forgotten that moment completely.

The entire lobby watched with him.

Someone muttered,

"So that's the husband."

Another voice answered,

"The pregnant wife deserved better."

Alex lowered his head.

For the first time since the rescue...

He realized this wasn't simply about one terrible decision.

People were beginning to question the life he'd been living long before the elevator doors ever closed.

And somewhere upstairs, behind a pane of ICU glass...

Lucy had already reached the same conclusion.
