Chapter 14 - The Choice Before Dawn

By 2:30 a.m., the marina had become a controlled chaos of investigators, sealed vehicles, whispered phone calls, and people discovering that years of confidence could collapse in minutes.
Julian Cross was detained for questioning on outstanding fraud warrants that Bell's team had quietly confirmed before arriving.
Dominic asked for an attorney and refused to speak.
Elena sat in the back of Matteo's SUV with a blanket around her shoulders while Liana held both her hands as if letting go might make her disappear again.
Matteo stood outside on the dock, staring at the authorization bearing Tomas Varric's code.
His uncle had always been the practical one.
The man who knew every account.
Every trust.
Every old contract.
After Rafael died, Tomas became the person who kept the family empire functioning while Matteo focused on expansion.
He had arranged Camila's funeral.
He had stood beside Matteo at the grave.
He had held Nico once and said the baby had Rafael's eyes.
Matteo felt physically sick remembering it.
Bell approached.
"You know the code?"
"Yes."
"Can it be forged?"
"Anything can be forged."
Matteo looked at him.
"But Tomas would know how."
Bell nodded.
"Don't call him."
Matteo had already thought about it.
"Why?"
"Because if he's involved, the worst thing you can do is tell him what we have before we know where he is."
Matteo checked his phone.
Three missed calls from Tomas.
One voicemail.
He played it on speaker.
"Matteo, your mother says there's some emergency at the estate. Call me before you make any decisions that affect the company."
Liana, listening from the open car door, gave a bitter laugh.
"That sounds normal."
"That's why it's frightening," Matteo said.
Elena looked toward him.
"Tomas knew about Cross before Camila did."
Matteo sat in the front passenger seat and turned around.
"Tell me everything."
Elena took a slow breath.
She explained that Saint Arden's secret program had begun as a profit scheme.
Cross charged wealthy families enormous premiums for "enhanced continuity protocols," a phrase designed to sound medical while promising outcomes no ethical clinic could guarantee.
Tomas discovered the program during a financial audit connected to the Varric Foundation.
Instead of shutting it down, he invested through shell companies.
The returns were substantial.
Then Matteo and Camila became Saint Arden clients.
"He saw an opportunity," Elena said.
"What opportunity?"
"Leverage."
Matteo's face hardened.
Elena looked at Nico's photograph on Matteo's phone.
"If the pregnancy succeeded through an illegal substitution, Tomas would have documents that could destroy you if you ever challenged him for control of the family holdings."
Matteo stared.
"I already controlled the company."
"Not the old trusts."
He went still.
She was right.
Rafael's estate had split voting rights across several family entities.
Tomas controlled enough to obstruct Matteo on major decisions.
For years, they had maintained an uneasy balance.
A scandal involving reproductive fraud, secret payments, and falsified consent could have shifted that balance overnight.
"Camila found the financial connection," Elena continued.
"She copied transfers between Cross and Tomas."
"Then she died."
Elena nodded.
"Dominic worked for Tomas before he worked for you."
Matteo knew that.
He had never considered it important.
Dominic had been recommended by his uncle after a security threat at a company event.
Matteo had mistaken longevity for loyalty.
"Why did Dominic help you enter the house as Ana if he was watching you?" Liana asked.
Elena shook her head.
"He didn't know at first. Rosa and Camila changed my records before he reviewed the staff file."
"When did he find out?"
"Three weeks ago."
Liana looked at Matteo.
That was the night Elena returned to the nursery in the hood.
Elena continued.
"Dominic cornered me in the service tunnel. He said if I disappeared again, Liana would stay safe."
Liana's fingers tightened around hers.
"You believed him?"
"I wanted to."
Elena looked ashamed.
"Then I saw a file with pictures of you."
Liana closed her eyes.
"So you came back for Nico."
"I came back to leave the memory card."
"Why under his mattress?"
Elena smiled through tears.
"Because nobody in that house checked anything as closely as they checked him. I thought someone honest would eventually find it."
Matteo let out a breath.
"My security team didn't."
"Liana did."
He looked at her.
Liana shrugged faintly.
"Poor people check seams. We fix things instead of replacing them."
Even Elena laughed.
The sound felt impossible and necessary.
Bell's phone rang.
He stepped away to answer.
When he returned, his face had changed.
"Tomas is not in New York."
Matteo stood.
"Where is he?"
"His plane landed in Santa Barbara two hours ago."
Liana's face tightened.
"He's here."
Bell nodded.
"And your estate's gate camera picked up his vehicle twelve minutes ago."
Matteo's blood went cold.
Nico.
He called Rosa.
No answer.
He called Dr. Shaw.
No answer.
He called the guard outside the nursery.
The line connected.
No one spoke.
Then it disconnected.
Matteo was already moving.
The drive back to the estate felt endless.
Bell's vehicles followed.
Liana sat beside Elena in the rear, both silent now.
Matteo called the house repeatedly.
Nothing.
At 3:21 a.m., the estate appeared beyond the trees.
The front gates stood open.
Every exterior light was off.
Matteo's hands shook for the first time all night.
He stopped the SUV before the main drive.
Bell ordered everyone to remain back while his team entered.
Matteo ignored him.
So did Liana.
Elena grabbed Liana's arm.
"Don't."
"Nico is in there."
"That's why you don't run blind."
Liana looked at her sister.
Elena's voice softened.
"I already disappeared from you once. Don't make me lose you because you're angry."
Liana stopped.
Matteo heard the words too.
For months he had equated love with refusing distance.
Nico cried, so Matteo stayed until exhaustion made him useless.
Camila hid danger, so Marisol controlled more.
Elena loved Liana, so she let her believe a lie for ten months.
Everyone called it protection.
Too often it was fear wearing a noble name.
Matteo forced himself to wait for Bell's signal.
Forty seconds later, Bell waved them forward.
The foyer was empty.
One guard sat conscious against the wall, dazed but not seriously hurt.
"Tomas used Marisol's override," he said.
"He had two private security men. They locked us downstairs."
"Where's Nico?"
"Nursery. Mrs. Alvarez stayed with him."
Matteo ran upstairs.
The nursery door stood open.
Rosa was inside holding Nico.
The baby was crying.
Marisol stood between the crib and Tomas Varric.
Tomas held no weapon.
He did not need one.
He held a leather folder.
"There you are," he said when Matteo entered.
Matteo stopped.
"Get out."
Tomas smiled.
At fifty-six, he looked enough like Rafael that seeing him in the nursery made Matteo feel briefly like a child again.
"Before you embarrass yourself further, read this."
He tossed the folder onto the changing table.
Inside was an emergency petition prepared for family court.
It alleged that Matteo had knowingly participated in illegal reproductive practices and was now exposing Nico to unstable individuals connected to a criminal investigation.
Attached were photographs of Liana crying on the patio, Elena in disguise entering the nursery, and Matteo meeting with Cross at the marina.
Out of context, every image looked damning.
"You planned this," Matteo said.
"I planned for the possibility that grief would make you reckless."
Tomas looked toward Marisol.
"Your mother agrees that Nico needs stability."
Marisol's face went white.
"Do not speak for me."
Tomas's smile vanished.
"Marisol."
"I said do not speak for me."
She stepped closer to Matteo.
"I spent months trying to keep scandal away from this family."
Her voice shook.
"All I did was teach men like you that I would help hide their dirt."
Tomas looked at her with contempt.
"You signed the foundation transfers."
"Yes."
"You destroyed the drive."
"Yes."
"Then you are implicated too."
Marisol took out her phone.
"I know."
She pressed a button.
"That is why I sent a full statement to counsel twenty minutes ago."
Tomas stared at her.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Bell entered behind Matteo.
"Mr. Varric, step away from the child."
Tomas looked from Bell to Matteo.
"You would destroy your father's company over a mistake made at a clinic?"
Matteo looked at Nico crying in Rosa's arms.
Then at Liana and Elena standing in the doorway.
Then at the photograph of Camila on the nursery shelf.
"No," he said.
"I would destroy a lie before I let my son inherit it."
Tomas's face hardened.
"You think the truth will make you a hero?"
"No."
Matteo stepped forward.
"I think it will make me accountable."
Outside the windows, the sky had begun to lighten.
Dawn was coming.
Bell's team escorted Tomas downstairs for questioning.
He was not yet charged.
But the leather folder, the authorization codes, Dominic's files, Cross's records, Marisol's statement, and Camila's notebooks now existed together.
The story could no longer be buried by one signature or one fire.
When the room finally quieted, Rosa handed Nico to Matteo.
The baby screamed.
Matteo's face tightened.
Liana stepped toward them.
Then stopped herself.
"Don't take him from me," Matteo said.
"I wasn't going to."
She stood beside him.
Elena moved to the other side.
Nico saw her.
His crying stopped.
The baby stared at Elena with enormous eyes.
His fingers reached toward her face.
Elena broke into tears.
"Hi, little star."
She hummed the family lullaby.
Nico smiled.
Then, unexpectedly, he turned back toward Matteo.
He placed one hand against his father's cheek.
Matteo closed his eyes.
For the first time in weeks, Nico stayed calm in his arms without anyone else holding him.
Behind them, morning light entered the nursery.
May you like
But Elena was still holding one last secret.
She looked at Matteo and said quietly, "Camila left something for Nico that nobody else has seen."
