Chapter 16: The Final Chamber

Chapter 16: The Final Chamber

The coordinates Richard sent led us deeper beneath the facility.

Much deeper.

Past the original Project Horizon servers.

Past the abandoned research rooms.

Past the areas even William Cross had tried to erase from history.

The elevator descended for almost three minutes before stopping.

No one spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

Whatever was down there...

William had hidden it for a reason.

The doors opened.

A narrow hallway stretched into darkness.

Unlike the rest of the facility, this place wasn't abandoned.

The walls were clean.

The lights worked.

The security cameras followed our movements.

Someone had been here recently.

Someone had been waiting.

Graves raised his weapon.

"Careful."

I nodded.

I didn't need to be told.

I knew this kind of place.

A place designed by people who expected betrayal.

At the end of the hallway was another door.

No lock.

No keypad.

Just a small screen.

A message appeared.

WELCOME BACK, ARTHUR.

Graves looked at me.

"He expected you."

I stared at the screen.

"Yes."

"How?"

I touched the display.

"Because William knows me."

The door opened.

The room beyond was unlike anything we had seen.

It wasn't a server room.

It wasn't an office.

It was a command center.

A complete operation room.

Large screens covered the walls.

Thousands of names.

Thousands of files.

Every person connected to Project Horizon.

Every secret.

Every weakness.

Everything.

In the center of the room sat one chair.

William Cross's chair.

Then the speakers activated.

"Impressive, isn't it?"

William's voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like he was welcoming guests into his home.

I looked around.

"Show yourself."

A screen turned on.

William appeared.

But this time...

He wasn't alone.

Behind him stood Richard.

My eyes narrowed.

"You brought him here."

William smiled.

"No."

Richard stepped forward.

"I came."

His voice was different.

Not arrogant.

Not confident.

Broken.

Graves immediately moved.

"Richard Cross, you're under—"

William interrupted.

"Always following procedures."

He smiled.

"That is why people like you never win."

Graves ignored him.

"Richard, step away from him."

Richard looked at his father.

Then back at us.

"I spent my whole life thinking I was special."

Nobody spoke.

"I thought I was his successor."

His voice shook.

"But I was never his son."

He looked at William.

"I was his insurance policy."

William's expression remained unchanged.

That was the most disturbing part.

No anger.

No regret.

Nothing.

"Emotional."

He looked at Richard.

"Always your weakness."

Richard clenched his fists.

"You destroyed my life."

William tilted his head.

"No."

"You did."

The words hit harder than a punch.

"You wanted power."

"You wanted respect."

"You wanted to be feared."

William stepped closer to the camera.

"I simply gave you the opportunity."

I watched Richard carefully.

For years, I had seen him as the villain.

And he was.

He hurt Lily.

He controlled her.

He almost destroyed her life.

Nothing would change that.

But standing there...

I saw something else.

A man who had spent his entire life becoming exactly what his father created.

A monster raised by another monster.

William turned toward me.

"You're wondering why I brought him."

I didn't answer.

"Because every empire needs a successor."

He smiled.

"And every successor needs a test."

I looked at Richard.

"What test?"

William answered.

"Whether he can destroy the man who destroyed him."

Silence.

Richard stared at his father.

"You want me to kill him?"

William smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"I want you to choose."

The room changed.

A panel opened.

Inside was a weapon.

Two access cards.

Two options.

One marked:

PROJECT HORIZON RESTORATION

The other:

PROJECT HORIZON CONTROL

William continued.

"Arthur can restore the original system."

He looked at Richard.

"Or you can activate the improved version."

Richard looked confused.

"What happens?"

William smiled.

"Control."

I stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

William looked at me.

"Why?"

"Because that's all you've ever offered."

"Control?"

"Yes."

I pointed toward the screens.

"You collected secrets because you were afraid."

William's expression changed slightly.

"Careful."

"No."

I continued.

"You built an empire because you were terrified that without power, nobody would respect you."

For the first time...

William looked angry.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Richard noticed.

And I knew.

He saw it too.

His father wasn't untouchable.

He wasn't emotionless.

He was just another man.

A scared man.

A man who built walls because he was afraid someone would see the weakness underneath.

The countdown appeared on every screen.

00:45:00

Forty-five minutes.

William smiled.

"Choose, Arthur."

I looked at the system.

Then at Richard.

Then at the screens filled with stolen lives.

"You know what your problem is, William?"

He said nothing.

"You always thought power came from controlling people."

I walked toward the console.

"It doesn't."

I placed my hand on the system.

"Power comes from giving people their freedom back."

The system recognized me.

MASTER ACCESS AVAILABLE.

William's expression changed.

"What are you doing?"

I looked at him.

"Ending this."

The alarms started.

UNAUTHORIZED RESTORATION ATTEMPT

William's voice became colder.

"You don't understand what happens if you shut it down."

"I do."

"Thousands of files will disappear."

"Good."

He stared.

"Evidence."

I shook my head.

"No."

I looked at the names.

"The truth doesn't belong inside a machine."

Suddenly, the doors behind us locked.

Richard looked around.

"My father."

William smiled.

"Security protocol."

Richard turned toward the screen.

"You locked us in?"

William answered calmly.

"I locked the world out."

The countdown continued.

Thirty minutes.

William's final plan was beginning.

The system started uploading.

The files.

The secrets.

The names.

Everything.

Graves looked at me.

"Can you stop it?"

I looked at the code.

At the system I built.

At the weapon William corrupted.

Then I saw something.

A hidden pathway.

A final message from my wife.

Not a file.

Not a recording.

A line of code.

She had left me a way out.

I smiled for the first time.

Graves noticed.

"What?"

"My wife."

"What about her?"

"She knew."

I moved my hands across the console.

"She knew I would come back."

William's voice came through the speakers.

"What did she do?"

I looked directly at the camera.

"She beat you."

Silence.

"Fifteen years ago."

I continued typing.

"She already won."

The system changed.

RESTORATION MODE ACTIVATED

The countdown stopped.

The screens froze.

William's face appeared.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"No."

A single word.

Not powerful.

Not threatening.

Just afraid.

Because William Cross finally understood something.

The one thing he never planned for.

The one thing he couldn't control.

Love.

The room shook.

The final battle had begun.

And for the first time in fifteen years...

May you like

The Cross empire was no longer expanding.

It was collapsing.
