# Chapter 10: One Second

The little girl ran without looking back.
Her stuffed rabbit lay forgotten on the tarmac.
"Mom!"
Her frightened cry echoed across the runway.
Richard reacted instantly.
"Get back here!"
He raised the pistol.
From the command center at Site Echo, every agent watched the same horrifying moment unfold through the drone feed.
No one spoke.
No one breathed.
Director Collins' hand hovered over the radio.
He knew one wrong command could cost a child's life.
---
Special Agent Marcus Reed kept walking.
His reflective safety vest fluttered in the wind.
To anyone watching, he still looked like an ordinary fuel technician.
Only Collins knew the truth.
Reed had spent eleven months undercover preparing for exactly this kind of moment.
The little girl reached him.
Without breaking stride, Reed gently pulled her behind his legs.
His voice remained calm.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
"I've got you."
Richard finally recognized the movement.
His eyes narrowed.
"Who the hell are you?"
Reed didn't answer.
Instead, he slowly raised his empty hands.
"No one here wants anyone hurt."
Richard laughed bitterly.
"You people are everywhere."
---
Emily Mercer seized the opportunity.
She took one step away from Richard.
Then another.
Richard noticed.
His free hand grabbed her wrist.
She cried out.
The pistol remained pointed toward Reed.
"You move again," Richard snarled, "and she dies first."
The little girl buried her face against Reed's leg.
He could feel her trembling.
Over his earpiece came Collins' steady voice.
"Hold your position."
Reed answered quietly.
"I'm not sure I can."
---
Back at Site Echo, Ramirez studied every angle on the monitors.
"Can we get a clean shot?"
The tactical commander shook his head.
"Too many obstructions."
"What about the sniper?"
"No clear line."
The fuel truck.
The aircraft stairs.
Emily.
The child.
Everything blocked the shot.
No one was willing to gamble with innocent lives.
---
Richard's phone suddenly vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
Confusion.
Then disbelief.
"What?"
He answered immediately.
"No..."
He turned away from Reed for only a second.
"What do you mean every account is frozen?"
Silence.
Then another shout.
"Fix it!"
He ended the call and immediately dialed another number.
No answer.
He tried again.
Voicemail.
Victoria Kane quietly backed away.
Richard barely noticed.
He called a third person.
Nothing.
A fourth.
Nothing.
One by one, the people who had always answered him...
Didn't.
---
At that same moment, another analyst rushed into the command center.
"Director!"
Collins looked over.
"We've got federal warrants."
He handed Collins several freshly signed documents.
"Richard Hale."
"Evelyn Hale."
"Victoria Kane."
"Chief Daniel Brooks."
"Dr. Stephen Caldwell."
"And seven additional co-conspirators."
Ramirez smiled for the first time all day.
"The dominoes are falling."
---
On the runway, Richard looked around wildly.
His confidence was gone.
For the first time, he looked like a man who realized he was alone.
His mother slowly approached him.
"Richard..."
"We need to leave."
He turned toward her.
"With what money?"
She didn't answer.
He looked toward Victoria.
"You said this couldn't happen."
Victoria's voice remained steady.
"I said it wouldn't happen if Mercer stayed loyal."
Richard's eyes filled with rage.
"You told me he would never talk."
"I was wrong."
Those three words echoed across the quiet runway.
Richard stared at her.
Then something inside him broke.
He shoved Emily aside.
Pointed the pistol toward Victoria.
"This is your fault."
---
Back at Site Echo, every alarm inside the tactical operations room sounded at once.
"Weapon redirected!"
The sniper adjusted instantly.
"Clear line!"
Collins grabbed the radio.
"Take the shot only if—"
Before he could finish...
A single gunshot echoed across the runway.
Every monitor shook slightly from the drone's microphone.
For one terrible second...
No one knew who had fired.
The dust settled.
Richard remained standing.
So did Victoria.
Then another figure slowly collapsed to the ground.
Emily Mercer screamed.
The little girl cried hysterically.
Reed sprinted forward.
The drone zoomed closer.
The person lying on the pavement wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't Richard.
It was Evelyn Hale.
Richard's mother.
She had stepped between them at the last possible moment.
The bullet struck her in the shoulder.
Richard stared down at her in complete shock.
"Mom..."
She looked up at him through tears.
Her voice was barely audible.
"What..."
"...have you become?"
The pistol slipped from Richard's hand.
It clattered onto the concrete.
That was all the opening Reed needed.
He tackled Richard to the ground.
Within seconds, tactical agents rushed onto the runway from every direction.
"Federal agents!"
"Don't move!"
Richard struggled wildly, but it was over.
Handcuffs snapped around his wrists.
Victoria Kane dropped to her knees without resisting.
Emily pulled her daughter into a desperate embrace.
The little girl sobbed against her mother's shoulder.
Reed picked up the discarded pistol and cleared the chamber.
"Scene secure," he reported.
Back at Site Echo, a wave of relief swept through the room.
But it lasted only a moment.
An analyst's computer emitted a sharp warning tone.
His face turned pale as lines of encrypted data appeared on his screen.
"Director..."
Collins turned.
"What is it now?"
The analyst swallowed hard.
"We've just decrypted Richard's final backup server."
He looked at Arthur.
"It contains a file scheduled to be released automatically..."
He paused.
"...to every major news organization in the country."
Ramirez frowned.
"What kind of file?"
The analyst clicked it open.
The title appeared in large black letters.
The Arthur Hale Files
The room fell silent.
May you like
Richard hadn't just planned to destroy Lily.
He had spent years preparing to destroy me, too.
