CHAPTER 1 — The Quiet Aftermath

The world didn’t explode after the ballroom.

It softened.

News cycles moved on, as they always did. Headlines that once screamed scandal about Ethan Sterling and “the cake girl” slowly disappeared beneath louder stories.

But silence has weight.

Lily felt it every morning.

Back to deliveries. Back to early shifts. Back to carrying cakes that no longer felt light.

Except now… there was always a thought she couldn’t shake.

Ethan didn’t come back that night.

Not fully.

Not in words.

But sometimes she felt him in small things—an address saved in her phone she never deleted, a number she never called, a memory she didn’t understand she still owned.

And then—

On the seventh morning after the ballroom, a black car stopped outside the bakery.

No driver got out at first.

Just waiting.

Lily noticed it while wrapping a cake box.

Then the door opened.

Ethan stepped out.

No entourage. No announcement. Just him.

He didn’t smile.

He didn’t explain.

He simply said:

“I was wondering if you still fold them.”

Lily froze.

“Crane paper?” she asked.

A small nod.

And just like that, something invisible restarted.

Not a relationship.

Not a confession.

Something quieter.

Recognition that didn’t need permission.
