The Weight of Their Silence / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Children Refused to Board.

The Rome flight eventually left without any of them.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not Richard.

Not Lauren.

Not Ethan or Sophie.

By the time the gate closed, Gate 42 had become a monument to a plan that had collapsed in public.

I learned that from Ethan later.

At the time, all I knew was that the children had refused to board.

Lauren remained on speaker while Maya silently took notes.

"Dad told us the property company was his," Lauren said.

"Richard told you he owned the clinic building?"

"Not exactly."

"Then exactly what did he say?"

Lauren paused.

"He said the property LLC was controlled through a family trust and that Daniel had the right to sell the controlling interest."

Maya wrote FAMILY TRUST in capital letters.

"Which trust?" I asked.

"I don't know."

"You own Bennett Property Services."

Silence.

That landed.

"How do you know that?"

"Nathan traced the payments."

Lauren cursed softly.

"Rachel, I can explain that company."

"Everyone can explain everything today."

"Dad asked me to set it up."

"And more than three hundred thousand dollars moved through it."

"I didn't keep that money."

Maya lifted a hand, signaling me not to push too fast.

I took a breath.

"Where did it go?"

"Most of it went back out."

"To whom?"

Lauren was quiet.

Then I heard Ethan in the background.

"Tell her."

Lauren snapped something away from the phone.

Ethan spoke again.

"Tell her or I will."

My heart tightened.

"Ethan, what's happening?"

Lauren inhaled.

"Some of the money paid expenses for the lake property."

I stared at Maya.

"What lake property?"

"Dad's place in Wisconsin."

"Richard doesn't own a place in Wisconsin."

Lauren laughed once, without humor.

"Yes, he does."

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

"How long?"

"Three years."

Richard had spent three years telling us he rented the same lakeside house every summer because buying vacation property was financially foolish.

Apparently it was only foolish when he had to pay for it himself.

"What else?"

"Daniel's condo."

The room went cold.

"What condo?"

Lauren stopped breathing on the line.

Maya wrote CONDO.

"Lauren."

"There is a condo in the West Loop."

I stood so fast my chair scraped the floor.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"How long?"

"Maybe eighteen months."

Fourteen months of payments to Vanessa's company.

Eighteen months of a hidden condo.

Daniel's affair was getting older every time someone told the truth.

"Who paid for it?"

"Bennett Property Services handled some of the bills."

"Some?"

"Utilities, furnishings, association fees."

I laughed.

The sound frightened me.

"So I helped pay the business that paid for the condo where my husband took his girlfriend."

"Rachel, I didn't know that was what it was for at first."

"At first?"

"I found out later."

"And then you kept paying."

Lauren said nothing.

My eyes burned.

For the first time that day, anger became stronger than shock.

Not dramatic anger.

Not screaming.

Something worse.

A clean, focused fury.

"You came to my house for Thanksgiving."

"I know."

"You sat at my table."

"I know."

"You asked me for my pecan pie recipe while you were paying bills on your brother's secret condo."

"I know."

Her voice cracked.

I did not feel sorry for her.

Not yet.

"Why are you telling me now?"

Lauren took a long breath.

"Because Ethan found messages on Dad's phone."

I looked toward the speaker.

"What messages?"

Ethan answered this time.

"I took pictures."

His voice was steady in the way teenagers sound when they are trying hard not to sound scared.

"Grandpa left his phone on the seat when he went to talk to Dad."

"Ethan, you shouldn't be in the middle of this."

"I already am."

He was right.

I hated that he was right.

"What did you see?"

"A group chat."

"Who was in it?"

"Dad, Grandpa, Aunt Lauren, and Vanessa."

Lauren spoke quickly.

"I was added for travel details."

Ethan ignored her.

"The chat is called Transition."

Maya and I looked at each other.

"Send me the screenshots," I said.

"I will."

"And then stop looking at their phones."

"Why?"

"Because I need you safe more than I need evidence."

That finally silenced him.

Sophie spoke faintly in the background.

"Rachel?"

My anger disappeared for one second.

"I'm here."

"Are you mad at us?"

I sat back down.

"No."

"Dad said you knew Vanessa."

"I didn't."

"He said you and him were basically separated."

I pressed my lips together.

"We weren't."

Sophie started crying.

"He said you didn't want to tell us until after summer."

I looked at Maya.

Her face had softened.

"Soph, listen to me."

"Okay."

"Your dad's choices are not your responsibility."

"But I went with them."

"Because adults you trusted told you a story."

"I should have asked you."

"Maybe."

I swallowed.

"But you are twelve."

There was a long silence.

"Are you leaving us?"

The question broke something inside me.

Daniel had not only cheated on me.

He had prepared his children for my disappearance.

He had made them believe I had agreed to be replaced.

He had created an emotional exit plan around me while I was still making Sophie's dentist appointments.

"I don't know what happens next," I said.

"But I am not disappearing without talking to you."

Sophie sniffed.

"Promise?"

"Promise."

The screenshots arrived while we were still on the call.

Maya opened them on her laptop.

The first image showed months of messages.

RICHARD: Rome is better because Rachel won't question the timing if Daniel says emergency coverage.

DANIEL: She always believes the hospital excuse.

I stared at those words.

She always believes the hospital excuse.

Twelve years of trust reduced to a useful weakness.

The second screenshot was from Lauren.

LAUREN: Are you sure the kids think Rachel agreed?

DANIEL: They do now.

The third was Vanessa.

VANESSA: I don't want drama at the airport.

DANIEL: There won't be any.

RICHARD: Rachel has no reason to be there.

The fourth screenshot made Maya sit forward.

RICHARD: Consent page needs notarization by Tuesday.

LAUREN: I am not notarizing Rachel's signature if she isn't present.

DANIEL: Peter said remote acknowledgment is enough.

LAUREN: Not with me.

RICHARD: Then we use Kessler.

Maya circled the name Kessler.

"Who is that?"

I shook my head.

"No idea."

Ethan sent another screenshot.

This one was only two days old.

RICHARD: Once Meridian funds, the old structure is irrelevant.

DANIEL: Rachel can fight about it afterward.

VANESSA: You said she already signed off.

DANIEL: She will.

Vanessa's response came three minutes later.

VANESSA: That's not the same thing.

I read the exchange twice.

Maya noticed it too.

"Vanessa may not know as much as Daniel thinks she knows."

"She knew enough to get on a plane with my husband."

"I'm not defending her."

"Good."

"I'm telling you she may become useful."

I hated the word useful because Daniel had used my trust the same way.

But Maya was thinking three moves ahead.

That was why she was here.

Lauren interrupted.

"Rachel, Dad is coming back."

"Where are you?"

"Still near the gate."

"Take the kids somewhere public."

"Okay."

"And Lauren?"

"Yes?"

"Do not delete anything."

She was silent.

"If you want me to believe one word you say from this point forward, preserve everything."

"I will."

The call ended.

Maya immediately downloaded the screenshots into a secure evidence folder.

Then she looked at me.

"We need to figure out what Transition means."

I knew what Daniel meant emotionally.

He was transitioning from me to Vanessa.

But Richard did not care enough about romance to name a group chat after it.

"It's the sale," I said.

"Maybe."

Maya enlarged one screenshot.

At the very bottom, partially cut off, was a message from Richard.

Only the first line was visible.

RICHARD: After closing, move Rachel's Class A units into...

The rest was hidden beneath the edge of Ethan's photograph.

Maya leaned closer to the screen.

"Class A units."

I felt a chill.

"I don't remember having Class A units."

"Then somebody definitely remembers for you."

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from Vanessa.

I had never given her my number.

I opened it.

RACHEL, DANIEL TOLD ME YOU SIGNED THE DIVORCE PAPERS SIX MONTHS AGO.

A second message followed.

I THINK HE LIED TO BOTH OF US.

May you like

Then a third.

PLEASE ASK HIM WHAT HARBOR RIDGE TRUST IS.
