Chapter 12 - The Man Vincent Trusted Most.

I held the photograph so tightly the edge cut into my thumb.
Julian stood twenty feet away in the courthouse hallway talking to one of Vincent's attorneys.
He had no idea what I was holding.
At least I thought he didn't.
Vincent noticed my face first.
"What is it?"
I handed him the photograph.
He looked down.
Everything in his expression disappeared.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Nothing.
That emptiness frightened me.
Sofia moved closer.
"Vincent?"
He handed her the picture.
She gasped.
"Julian."
Across the hallway, Julian glanced toward us.
His eyes moved from Vincent to Sofia to me.
Then to the photograph.
He stopped talking.
Detective Torres saw the change immediately.
"Nobody moves."
Julian slowly lifted both hands.
"I can explain."
Vincent walked toward him.
"Start."
Torres stepped between them.
"Not here."
"Start," Vincent repeated.
Julian looked at me.
"The photograph is real."
My stomach tightened.
"You broke into the lake house."
"Yes."
Ethan stared at him.
"Why?"
Julian's face softened.
"Because your mother asked me to."
Nobody expected that.
Vincent laughed once.
It sounded dangerous.
"Try again."
"Isabella believed the house security system was compromised."
Julian spoke carefully.
"She wanted to know whether someone could enter without triggering an alarm."
"So she told you to break a window?" Torres asked.
"No."
"She told me to enter through the old pantry door."
"The window broke when someone came after me from inside."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
"Marcus."
The hallway went silent.
Julian continued.
"I thought Marcus was part of the security test."
"He wasn't."
"He hit me and ran."
I remembered Mom's video.
Marcus moved documents whenever we got close.
"Why did my mother have a photograph of you climbing through the window?"
"Because Elena arrived seconds later."
"She saw me."
"She took photographs because she did not know whether I was involved."
"Were you?"
"No."
I wanted to believe him.
That was exactly why I did not.
"Why didn't you tell Vincent?"
Julian looked at Vincent.
"Because Isabella made me promise."
Vincent stepped closer.
"Everybody apparently made promises except to me."
Pain flashed across Julian's face.
"You were protecting Dominic then."
"I was protecting the family."
"Exactly."
Julian's voice sharpened for the first time.
"You couldn't see the difference."
Vincent went still.
The words were almost identical to Sofia's.
That made them harder to dismiss.
Torres took Julian aside for formal questioning.
For three hours, we sat in a courthouse conference room.
Ethan fell asleep with his head in Rosa's lap.
Sofia paced.
Vincent stared out the window.
I read my mother's letter again.
Then again.
When Torres returned, she looked less suspicious.
"Julian's account matches an old statement from Isabella's private investigator."
Vincent turned.
"You knew she had one?"
"No."
"Neither did I until twenty minutes ago."
Torres handed him a photocopy.
"The investigator died two years ago, but his archived files were stored with Grace Brennan."
Grace nodded.
"Isabella retained him through my office."
Vincent looked at her.
"Did every woman in my life build a separate government around me?"
Grace did not smile.
"Only the intelligent ones."
Even I laughed at that.
Vincent did not.
Torres continued.
"The investigator identified Marcus as the person at the lake house."
"He also believed Marcus was reporting to someone senior in the family."
"Who?"
"Unknown."
Dominic was still the obvious answer.
But obvious answers had become dangerous.
We returned to the Moretti house under court-approved placement rules.
For the first time, I entered through the front door knowing I was legally allowed to stay.
Rosa had placed a small nameplate on the guest bedroom door.
LILY.
I stared at it.
"Too much?" she asked.
"A little."
"I'll remove it."
I touched the wooden letters.
"No."
She smiled and walked away.
That evening, Grace explained the trust in more detail.
The money could pay for school, medical care, housing, and eventually college.
But no large distributions could be made without independent approval.
The shares could not be sold before I turned twenty-five without a court order.
Isabella had designed the trust like a fortress.
"She really didn't trust anybody," I said.
Grace looked at Vincent.
"She trusted people."
"She didn't trust power."
Vincent nodded slowly.
"Maybe she was right."
A week earlier, I could not imagine Vincent Moretti admitting that.
Now I understood how much Ethan's disappearance had changed him.
The next morning brought a new disaster.
Moretti Group's board announced an emergency meeting.
A packet of documents had been delivered anonymously to every board member and several newspapers.
The documents claimed Vincent had hidden my trust for years and deliberately kept me homeless so he could retain control of Isabella's shares.
I read the headline on Grace's tablet.
MORETTI HEIRESS LIVED ON STREETS WHILE BILLIONAIRE HELD HER FORTUNE.
"That's a lie."
Vincent stood by the window.
"Yes."
"They make it sound like you knew where I was."
"That's the point."
Grace looked through the packet.
"Some of these documents are altered."
"Can we prove it?"
"Eventually."
I hated that word.
Eventually did not stop headlines today.
The board scheduled a charity gala for that night where Vincent was already supposed to speak.
Dominic announced that he would request Vincent temporarily step down as chairman until the accusations were investigated.
"He planned this," Sofia said.
Vincent nodded.
"Probably."
"Then fight him."
"I will."
I looked at him.
"I'm coming."
Every adult said no at once.
I stared at them.
"The entire argument is about me."
Grace shook her head.
"You're fourteen."
"Which apparently doesn't stop newspapers from putting my face online."
Torres spoke from the doorway.
"Public appearance creates security problems."
"So does hiding."
I looked at Vincent.
"If I stay here, Dominic gets to tell everybody what happened to me."
"If I go, I get to tell them myself."
Vincent studied me.
"Do you want to?"
"Yes."
"Not because you think you owe me?"
"No."
"Not because Ethan asked?"
Ethan looked offended.
"I didn't ask yet."
"No."
I took a breath.
"Because I'm tired of being invisible when it's convenient for everyone else."
Vincent nodded.
"Then you come."
The gala occupied the ballroom of the Moretti Grand Hotel.
Cameras crowded the entrance.
I wore a simple navy dress Rosa helped me choose.
No diamonds.
No designer label I could pronounce.
My mother's silver bracelet was on my wrist.
Vincent wore the same kind of black suit he always wore.
Ethan stayed home with Rosa under protest.
Inside, hundreds of people stopped talking when we entered.
I had been ignored by crowds before.
Being stared at was worse.
Vincent leaned slightly toward me.
"You can leave anytime."
"So can you."
"Unfortunately, they own shares."
"You own the hotel."
"Details."
I almost smiled.
Dominic stood near the stage surrounded by board members.
He looked directly at me.
Then he applauded.
Slowly.
Other people joined because rich rooms are apparently full of people waiting to be told when to clap.
Dominic approached.
"Lily."
"Dominic."
"You look well."
"Indoor heating does miracles."
His smile tightened.
"I hope Vincent hasn't convinced you that money makes him family."
"He hasn't."
"Good."
"Ethan did that first."
Dominic's expression changed.
Before he could answer, Grace hurried toward us.
Her face was pale.
"Vincent."
"What?"
"The evidence drive from Elena's coat is missing from police property review."
Torres appeared behind her.
"A duplicate was taken during transfer."
Vincent stared at her.
"By who?"
"We don't know yet."
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph filled the screen.
Julian Kane sat in the driver's seat of a car.
The missing evidence bag was visible beside him.

Underneath were six words.
