CHAPTER 3 — “CALL YOUR GRANDMOTHER”

Inside a temporary heated vehicle, the boy finally stopped shaking.

The blanket around him smelled faintly of clean fabric and something expensive he didn’t recognize.

Across from him, the grandmother sat perfectly still.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

Outside, the house was now distant—surrounded, silent, controlled.

Finally, the boy broke the silence.

“Why now?”

The grandmother looked at him.

Not with pity.

With precision.

“Because your mother’s rule was not a suggestion,” she said. “It was protection.”

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

Faded edges. Old handwriting.

The boy’s name on it.

His breath caught.

“I was supposed to open that at eighteen,” he whispered.

“Yes,” she said. “But your father got impatient with things he didn’t understand.”

The boy hesitated.

Then asked the question he had buried for years:

“Am I… staying with you now?”

A long pause.

Outside, the snow continued falling, indifferent to human decisions.

The grandmother leaned back slightly.

“You are not staying with me,” she said.

The boy’s heart sank.

Then she continued:

“You are returning to where you should have been from the beginning.”

She looked out at the snow for a moment.

“And I will make sure no one takes that away again.”

The boy slowly opened the envelope.

Inside, a single line in his mother’s handwriting:

If you’re reading this, you are finally safe.

The boy exhaled—shaky, uneven.

For the first time that night, not from cold.

But from relief he didn’t yet know how to carry.

The limousine drove forward into the storm.

Behind them, the house stayed lit.

But it no longer felt like it belonged to anyone inside.

ENDING (IN ENGLISH)

And that Christmas night, in the middle of a frozen silence no one in that house would ever forget, the truth finally broke through the glass they had built their life on.

Not with chaos.

Not with screams.

But with a single word from a woman they never should have underestimated:

“Demolish.”
