Chapter 2: An Unexpected Lesson
Unable to bear the shame, Eleanor hurried out of the ballroom.
She found Linda standing alone on the hotel's rooftop terrace, overlooking the glittering city skyline.
"I'm... sorry," Eleanor whispered.
Linda remained silent.
"I judged you because of your dress... because you came alone... because I thought money looked a certain way."
Linda smiled faintly.
"I've been wealthy for years," she replied. "The difference is that I stopped needing everyone else to know."
The words hit harder than any public humiliation ever could.
"I embarrassed myself," Eleanor admitted.
"No," Linda corrected gently.
"You revealed yourself."
For a long moment, neither woman spoke.
Finally, Linda handed Eleanor the ownership certificate she had left behind.
"I didn't come here to throw anyone out."
She looked toward the glowing ballroom.
"I came because Sophie wanted someone she considered family to witness the happiest day of her life."
Eleanor wiped away a tear.
"I don't deserve your forgiveness."
"Perhaps not today," Linda said.
