Chapter 2: A Lesson Money Can't Buy

Nearly twenty minutes passed before Michael quietly slipped outside.

Linda stood alone on the hotel's rooftop terrace overlooking the city skyline.

"I owe you an apology," he said.

Linda smiled softly.

"You don't owe me anything."

"I invited you because I wanted my family to know the kind of person you are."

She leaned against the railing.

"I've owned this hotel for twelve years, Michael."

"I've watched thousands of weddings."

She chuckled quietly.

"The expensive flowers fade."

"The designer dresses are packed away."

"The five-course meals are forgotten."

She looked at him.

"But people never forget how they were treated."

Michael lowered his eyes.

"I wish my mother understood that."

"So do I," Linda replied.

Just then, the terrace door opened.

Eleanor stepped outside.

Without her jewelry.

Without the confidence that had filled the ballroom.

Only regret remained.

She slowly approached Linda.

"I judged you."

Linda remained silent.

"I believed expensive clothes made someone important."

Another pause.

"I spent years teaching my son about success..."

Her voice cracked.

"...and somehow forgot to teach him humility."

Tears rolled freely down Eleanor's face.

"I'm sorry."

For several long seconds, Linda simply watched her.

Then she nodded.

"The apology is genuine."

Eleanor looked hopeful.

"But forgiveness," Linda said gently, "is something earned over time—not granted because the room got quiet."

Eleanor accepted the answer.
