Chapter 3 - The Woman in Scarlet.

At 2:11 a.m., Vanessa Hale stood in Claire's bedroom wearing Claire's robe.
The security camera in the hallway could not see inside the room, but the microphone built into the smart-home panel captured the sound of drawers opening.
Claire listened through headphones at Mercer Financial.
Vanessa laughed softly.
"She really kept this thing?"
Damian answered from somewhere near the dressing room.
"That bag?"
"The brown one."
"She carries it everywhere."
Vanessa made a disgusted sound.
"It looks like something a grandmother would take to a bus station."
Claire touched the worn purse beside her chair.
They were talking about a different bag in the closet, one of the expensive replacements Damian had bought and Claire rarely used.
He did not even know which purse was missing.
Vanessa opened another drawer.
"Where would she keep documents?"
Damian's answer came too quickly.
"Why?"
"Because if she decides to fight the divorce, we need to know what she has."
Claire looked at Mara.
Mara lifted one finger, signaling for silence.
The audio continued.
"You said she wasn't going to fight," Damian said.
"I said she'd be too humiliated to fight."
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"That was before she walked out acting like she owned the place."
Damian laughed, but the sound lacked confidence.
"Claire doesn't own anything."
"Are you sure?"
There was a pause.
Claire could picture Damian's face.
He hated questions that required him to admit he did not know something.
"Everything she has came from me," he said.
Vanessa did not answer immediately.
"Then why did she say the company exists because she allows it?"
"Because she was humiliated."
"People say strange things when they're humiliated."
"Exactly."
Another drawer opened.
"And sometimes they say true things because they think no one will believe them."
Damian's voice cooled.
"What are you suggesting?"
"I'm suggesting you stop assuming she's stupid just because your mother does."
Claire almost laughed.
Vanessa was many things, but stupid was not one of them.
That was what made her dangerous.
The audio shifted as someone moved closer to the wall panel.
"Where is the necklace?" Damian asked.
Silence followed.
Mara's eyes snapped toward Claire.
Vanessa finally answered.
"Safe."
"That's not what I asked."
"And I said it's safe."
Damian lowered his voice.
"The police are here."
"Good."
"They want to search."
"Then let them search Claire's rooms."
"What if they don't find it?"
Vanessa laughed quietly.
"They will."
Claire removed the headphones.
The conference room seemed colder.
"They're planting it now."
Mara was already reaching for her phone.
"I'll call the detective."
Claire stopped her.
"Not yet."
Nora stared at her.
"Claire, they are trying to put stolen property in your bedroom."
"I know."
"Then why are we waiting?"
Claire looked at the security timestamp.
"Because Damian already signed a written theft complaint."
Mara understood first.
"You want them to complete the act."
"I want evidence no one can explain away as a misunderstanding."
Julian folded his arms.
"That is a dangerous game."
Claire's eyes stayed on the screen.
"So was staying married to him."
At 2:19 a.m., the bedroom door opened.
Vanessa stepped into the corridor.
She carried nothing visible.
Damian followed.
They disappeared toward the main staircase.
Three minutes later, an officer entered Claire's bedroom with Evelyn and a house manager.
The camera did not show the search itself.
The audio did.
Closet doors opened.
A drawer slammed.
Evelyn complained that the police were being too gentle.
Then a male voice said, "Ma'am, I found something."
Claire closed her eyes.
A photograph arrived by email ten minutes later from Detective Aaron Pike.
Mara had already contacted him through official channels and explained that Claire would cooperate through counsel.
The image showed Evelyn's diamond-and-emerald necklace inside a white evening clutch.
Claire recognized the clutch.
Damian had bought it for her last Christmas.
She had used it once.
Detective Pike's message was careful.
Ms. Ellison, please have your client contact me before 9:00 a.m. regarding recovered property.
Mara typed a response.
"What do you want me to tell him?"
"That we'll meet at seven."
Nora looked at Claire as though she had misheard.
"Before the board meeting?"
"Yes."
"Why give Damian time to prepare?"
"Because Damian thinks the police finding the necklace ends this."
Claire stood and walked to the window.
The city below looked like a grid of cold white light.
"I want him to believe he won."
At the mansion, the party had finally begun to dissolve.
Guests left in clusters, carrying gossip more valuable to them than any party favor.
Before dawn, photographs of Claire's red cheek and Damian's furious expression had reached social media accounts devoted to Manhattan society.
One anonymous post claimed Claire had been caught stealing a family heirloom.
Another described her as a "former scholarship girl who married above her station."
A third said Damian had been protecting his elderly mother from financial abuse.
Nora read the posts with increasing fury.
"This is coordinated."
"Yes," Claire said.
"Vanessa?"
"Probably."
Theo turned his laptop around.
"Not probably."
He had traced several anonymous tips to a public-relations firm called Vale House Media.
Claire recognized the name.
Cross Dominion had paid the firm four hundred eighty thousand dollars over the previous six months.
The contract described its work as "reputation resilience consulting."
Vanessa's former college roommate was the managing director.
"Damian used company money to finance a campaign against his own wife," Mara said.
Theo nodded.
"It gets better."
"Worse," Nora corrected.
"It gets worse."
Theo opened another file.
Vale House had prepared draft statements three days before the birthday party.
One file was titled INTERNAL RESPONSE - FAMILY THEFT INCIDENT.
The creation timestamp was unmistakable.
Three days earlier.
Claire felt something cold settle beneath her ribs.
The necklace accusation had not been an improvisation.
It had been planned in advance.
The humiliation had been scripted.
The press response had been written before Evelyn lifted the empty box.
Mara read the draft silently.
Then she looked up.
"They intended to use this to force you into a settlement."
Claire took the document.
The final paragraph referred to a forthcoming separation agreement in which "Mrs. Cross is expected to waive any claim to Cross family assets in exchange for the family declining criminal prosecution."
Nora slammed her palm onto the table.
"They were going to blackmail you."
Claire read the sentence twice.
"They thought I would sign anything to avoid an arrest."
Julian's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and slowly looked toward Claire.
"That was our overnight desk."
"What happened?"
"Damian just tried to draw twenty-five million dollars from the emergency credit facility."
Theo sat forward.
"At three in the morning?"
"Yes."
"For what purpose?"
Julian's expression hardened.
"The request says acquisition liquidity."
Claire knew there was no acquisition.
She had reviewed every pending transaction the previous week.
"Where was the money supposed to go?"
Julian checked the message again.
"Cross Dominion Holdings One."
Theo started typing.
Twenty seconds later he swore.
"That's new."
"How new?" Claire asked.
"Registered yesterday."
The beneficial ownership record populated on his screen.
Damian Cross owned sixty percent.
Vanessa Hale owned forty.
Claire understood immediately.
They were not merely trying to force her out of the marriage.
They were preparing to move company assets into a new entity before she could discover the affair and the thefts.
The necklace frame-up was supposed to keep her busy, frightened, and legally compromised.
Julian looked at Claire.
"The safeguard blocked the draw."
"Does Damian know why?"
"Not yet."
As if summoned by the question, Claire's phone lit up.
Damian was calling again.
This time she answered.
No one in the conference room spoke.
"Claire," Damian said.
His voice had changed.
The arrogance was still there, but something urgent moved beneath it.
"Where are you?"
"Why?"
"Our credit facility is frozen."
Claire looked at Julian.
"Is it?"
"Don't play games with me."
"I'm not playing anything."
Damian breathed into the phone.
"Did you call Mercer?"
Claire let the silence stretch.
"Damian, you told me to get out of your house."
"This isn't about us."
Claire almost smiled.
"You finally said something true."
His voice dropped.
"Fix it."
"No."
"Claire."
"Goodnight, Damian."
"If you hang up on me-"
She ended the call.
For several seconds, no one in the conference room moved.
Then Julian's phone buzzed again.
He read the message.
"Damian has requested the identity of the controlling lender."
Claire picked up her worn leather purse.
"Send it to him."
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"Now?"
Claire's expression did not change.
