Chapter 2: The Price of Pride

Chapter 2: The Price of Pride
By sunset, the news had spread through the business world.
Financial analysts couldn't believe it.
"Carter Industries Shares Fall 42%."
"Voss Global Ends Strategic Partnership."
"Major Investors Pull Funding."
The headlines came faster than anyone could read them.
Damian spent the next twelve hours making frantic phone calls.
No one answered.
Banks postponed meetings.
Private equity firms declined.
Even longtime friends suddenly became unavailable.
Late that evening, he arrived at Elena's penthouse.
Rain soaked his expensive suit.
He rang the bell.
Nothing.
Again.
Still nothing.
Finally, the door opened.
Not Elena.
Nathan.
"Ms. Voss is expecting you."
Damian stepped inside.
Elena sat near the floor-to-ceiling windows, reading a book.
She didn't look up.
"You've come to negotiate."
He lowered himself into the chair across from her.
"I made mistakes."
She turned a page.
"I know."
"I can fix this."
She finally looked at him.
"Can you?"
He hesitated.
"I'll apologize."
"To whom?"
He blinked.
"To you."
She slowly closed the book.
"What about everyone else?"
His expression faltered.
"The employees you forced into unpaid overtime."
"The small suppliers you bullied into impossible contracts."
"The families whose businesses collapsed because you wanted larger profit margins."
She leaned forward.
"You didn't become this person today."
"You became him one decision at a time."
Damian looked away.
For the first time in years...
He had no argument.
Only silence.
Elena stood.
"I didn't end our contracts because you embarrassed me."
"I ended them because I finally accepted something."
"And what's that?"
"You cannot build a future with someone who mistakes kindness for weakness."
She walked toward the door.
"Our meeting is over."
Damian didn't move.

He knew.
There would never be another chance.
