Chapter 1: The Woman They Never Bothered to Know
"A what?" Elena interrupted.
Her voice wasn't raised.
It didn't need to be.
The ballroom, moments earlier buzzing with laughter and champagne glasses, had become so silent that the soft hum of the air-conditioning sounded deafening.
Damian stared at the documents as though they were written in another language.
"No..." he murmured, shaking his head. "This has to be fake."
The executive closed the folder with deliberate calm.
"I assure you, Mr. Crawford," he replied, "every document has already been verified by three international law firms."
Another executive stepped forward.
"As of this morning, Voss Global Holdings has officially acquired seventy-two percent of Crawford Capital's outstanding debt."
A ripple of gasps spread across the room.
Damian's knees nearly buckled.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying," the executive answered, "your company now answers to Ms. Elena Voss."
Veronica's face twisted with panic.
She looked at Elena as if seeing her for the first time.
"But... you cleaned your own apartment..."
"You drove an old sedan..."
"You wore the same coat for years..."
Elena smiled faintly.
"Because I liked it."
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
The simplicity of her answer humiliated them more than any insult ever could.
For years, they had measured worth by appearances.
For years, they had laughed at modesty.
And now they realized they had mistaken dignity for weakness.
Damian suddenly rushed toward Elena.
"Please..."
His voice cracked.
"I didn't know."
Elena looked into his eyes.
"I know."
"You judged before asking."
"You assumed before listening."
"You loved success more than character."
She took one slow step closer.
"The saddest part is..."
"I would have helped you."
Those words hit harder than any lawsuit.
Because they were true.
May you like
She would have.
Once.
